ICANN Doesn't Have to Own Your Corner of the Internet Anymore

Every time you type a web address into your browser, something invisible happens behind the scenes. A global system of servers — governed largely by a California-based nonprofit called ICANN — translates that human-readable name into the numeric address your computer actually needs. It's been this way since the early days of the commercial internet, and most people never think twice about it.

But a growing number of Americans are starting to ask a pretty reasonable question: why does a centralized authority get to decide who owns what on the web?

How Traditional DNS Actually Works (And Why It's a Problem)

The Domain Name System is basically the phone book of the internet. When you register a domain — say, yourbusiness.com — you're not actually buying it. You're renting it, usually annually, from a registrar that operates under ICANN's authority. Miss a payment, violate a policy, or just fall out of favor with your registrar, and you could lose access to the address you've been building your presence around for years.

That's not a hypothetical. Registrars have suspended domains under government pressure. ICANN has revoked domains over policy disputes. And in more authoritarian parts of the world, the domain system has been used as a tool for censorship — with knock-on effects for anyone trying to access information across borders.

Even in the US, the arrangement is a little uncomfortable if you think about it. You build a brand, drive traffic, establish trust — and the whole thing rests on an annual fee and the goodwill of a company that could change its terms at any point.

Enter Blockchain Domains

Decentralized domain systems flip this model on its head. Instead of a central registry, ownership is recorded directly on a blockchain. Buy a blockchain domain and it's yours — not rented, not licensed, but actually owned as a non-fungible token sitting in your crypto wallet.

Two platforms have emerged as the main players in this space.

Unstoppable Domains sells domains with extensions like .crypto, .nft, .wallet, and .x. You pay once, you own it forever. No renewals, no registrar that can pull the rug. The domain is minted as an NFT on Polygon (previously Ethereum), and transfers are handled wallet-to-wallet like any other crypto asset.

The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) takes a slightly different approach, operating as a decentralized protocol on Ethereum itself. ENS domains use the .eth extension and work similarly — pay a registration fee, own the name, and point it wherever you want. ENS has become particularly popular as a human-readable identifier for crypto wallets. Instead of sharing a 42-character Ethereum address, you can just tell someone to send funds to yourname.eth.

What You Can Actually Do With One

The use cases break down into a few practical categories.

Censorship-resistant websites. When you pair a blockchain domain with a decentralized hosting solution like IPFS, you get a website that doesn't have a single point of failure — or a single point of control. No registrar can suspend it, no hosting company can pull it down, and no government can send a takedown notice to a central authority. This matters enormously for journalists, activists, and anyone operating in a legal gray area.

Crypto payment addresses. This is probably the most immediately practical use for everyday Americans. Sending crypto to a wallet address is clunky and error-prone. Blockchain domains let you attach a readable name to your wallet so people can send you Bitcoin, Ethereum, or dozens of other tokens without copying and pasting a string of characters. Think of it like an email address, but for your wallet.

Digital identity. Some users are building out blockchain domains as a cornerstone of their decentralized identity — linking social profiles, verified credentials, and communication channels to a single owned namespace. It's early days, but the infrastructure is coming together.

Small business branding. For a small business owner who's skeptical of platform dependency, owning your domain outright is appealing. No surprise price hikes at renewal time, no registrar policies to navigate.

The Catch (There's Always a Catch)

None of this works seamlessly yet, and it's worth being honest about that.

The biggest hurdle is browser support. Traditional browsers don't natively resolve blockchain domains — you need a browser extension, a compatible browser like Brave, or a special DNS resolver configured on your device. That's a real friction point if you're trying to reach a general audience.

There's also the question of squatting and speculation. Because blockchain domains are assets, a lot of desirable names got snatched up early by people hoping to resell them. Sound familiar? It's the same thing that happened with .com domains in the late '90s, just faster and with NFT mechanics layered on top.

And while "no renewals" sounds great, you're still paying gas fees for Ethereum-based transactions, which can fluctuate significantly. Unstoppable Domains has moved to Polygon to reduce those costs, but it's worth factoring in.

Finally, there's no dispute resolution process the way ICANN provides one. If someone registers a blockchain domain using your trademarked business name, your legal options are murky at best.

Is This the Future of the Web?

Maybe, maybe not — but it's definitely a meaningful experiment in what internet infrastructure could look like when ownership is taken seriously.

The DNS system we have today was built for a different era, and it carries the assumptions of that era: that a central authority needs to manage naming, that annual fees are reasonable, that governments and corporations should have clear levers to pull when they want something taken down. Blockchain domains challenge all of those assumptions.

For most Americans, the practical entry point is probably the wallet-naming use case — it's genuinely useful right now, it's not that expensive, and it doesn't require anyone else to change their browser settings. From there, the broader vision of owned, censorship-resistant web presence is something worth watching as the tooling matures.

Your corner of the internet shouldn't come with a landlord. These systems aren't perfect yet, but they're building toward something real.
