Workers Are Done Letting Apps Take the Cut: Blockchain Platforms Are Handing Gig Laborers Actual Ownership
There's a number that tends to stop gig workers cold when they first encounter it: 30. That's the approximate percentage Uber extracts from every fare before a driver sees a cent. DoorDash operates in similar territory. These platforms didn't build the cars, don't make the deliveries, and don't carry the liability when something goes wrong — but they harvest a third of the economic value generated by the people who actually do the work.
For years, the standard response from workers was to either accept it or quit. The platforms had the customers, the technology, and the brand recognition. What were you going to do, build your own app?
As it turns out, increasingly, yes.
The Cooperative Model Meets the Blockchain
Worker cooperatives aren't a new idea — they've existed in various forms for over a century, from the Mondragon Corporation in Spain to small collectively-owned businesses scattered across the American Midwest. The concept is simple: the people doing the work own the enterprise and share in its governance and profits.
What blockchain technology adds to that model is infrastructure that makes running a decentralized cooperative at scale actually feasible. Smart contracts can automate profit distribution without requiring a trusted central administrator. Token-based governance lets workers vote on platform decisions proportionally to their participation. Transparent on-chain records make it harder for any small group to quietly redirect value away from the people who earned it.
Several platforms are now testing this combination in real-world labor markets, and the early results are generating genuine attention.
Braintrust: The Freelancer Platform Where Workers Own the Network
Braintrust launched with a premise that sounds almost too straightforward: a talent marketplace where the platform charges clients, not workers. Freelancers — mostly in tech and design fields — connect with enterprise clients, keep 100% of what they earn, and accumulate BTRST tokens based on their contributions to the network. Those tokens confer governance rights over platform decisions.
The model has attracted real corporate clients including Goldman Sachs, Nestlé, and NASA. Total talent earnings on the platform have crossed hundreds of millions of dollars. It's not a fringe experiment anymore.
Derek Walters, a UX designer based in Austin who's been on the platform for two years, describes the difference from traditional freelance marketplaces as tangible. "On Upwork, the platform is constantly taking its cut and you have zero say in how anything works. On Braintrust, I've actually voted on fee structure proposals. It's a small thing, but it matters psychologically — I feel like I'm part of something rather than just being extracted from."
Ride-Share and Delivery: The Harder Problem
White-collar freelancing is one thing. Cracking the ride-share and delivery sector — where the stakes are higher and the workers are often more economically vulnerable — is a different challenge entirely.
Eva Co-op, a Canadian ride-share cooperative, has demonstrated that driver-owned platforms can work at a regional scale, with drivers voting on rates and sharing in platform profits. In the US, several cities have seen grassroots organizing efforts pushing for similar models, though scaling them nationally requires solving some genuinely hard problems around insurance, regulatory compliance across 50 different state frameworks, and the network-effect advantage that incumbents like Uber and Lyft have spent billions building.
Some blockchain-native projects are attempting to solve the scale problem differently. Drife, for example, is building a decentralized ride-hailing protocol where drivers stake tokens to join the network and governance is distributed across participants. The approach sidesteps some traditional cooperative limitations by making the underlying protocol open and permissionless — in theory, anyone can build a front-end application on top of it without the core infrastructure being controlled by any single entity.
What Worker Governance Actually Looks Like in Practice
Skepticism about token-based governance is warranted, and it's worth addressing directly. In crypto's wilder phases, "governance tokens" often turned out to be fairly meaningless — a handful of large holders controlled most of the voting power, and actual workers had minimal influence.
The platforms getting the most serious attention have thought harder about this. Quadratic voting mechanisms weight votes to prevent whale domination. Participation-based token distribution — rather than purchase-based — means workers who actually use the platform accumulate governance rights organically. Some projects are experimenting with reputation systems that give long-term, high-quality contributors more influence than newcomers or speculators.
None of these mechanisms are perfect, and the governance design of any specific platform deserves scrutiny before a worker puts their livelihood on the line. But the tooling has matured considerably from the early DAO experiments that mostly ended in chaos or exploitation.
The Economic Model That Scares Incumbents
Here's what makes the traditional platforms nervous about this shift: their entire valuation is premised on the idea that the marketplace they built is worth the 20-30% they extract. But a marketplace is fundamentally a network of relationships between workers and customers. If that network migrates to a platform where workers own the infrastructure, the incumbent's leverage evaporates.
Uber's market cap is not a reflection of the cars or the drivers. It's a reflection of the customer relationships and the routing algorithms. Both of those can be replicated. The question is whether worker-owned alternatives can reach the critical mass needed to make the switch worth it for customers who currently care mostly about price and convenience.
That threshold hasn't been crossed nationally yet. But the pilots are real, the economics are increasingly legible, and the workers who've experienced ownership-based platforms tend not to want to go back.
María González, a TaskRabbit contractor in Chicago who's been exploring decentralized alternatives for handywork matching, puts it plainly: "The app doesn't show up to fix the sink. I do. Why does the app get to own the relationship I built with that customer?"
It's a question that's getting harder to answer — and harder for the platforms to ignore.
