wow. thanks for the link dawn and willow.

anything that throws a wrench at these harebrained "protection" schemes is good news indeed, and after xolox and now kazaa stopping application downloads we can all use some of that around here.

as the article points out it doesn't necessarily mean that royal phillips is opposed to the concept of encrypted discs but it by no means indicates they're for it either.

and everyday that goes by now sees file sharing becoming more normalized, less fringe, and ultimately less likely to be stopped.

Yea, but isn't PM that company who just debuted their custom CD player/burner a couple months ago?

Yeesh, talking about having a "special interest"!

Same road, sssssslightly different destinations.

I think the stand Philips is taking on "Copy Protection" may not be as it first appears...

As goldenrod has suggested it not the idea of Copy Protection they are opposed to but it is not "Their" scheme that is being used.

A Philips spokesman describing their new CD Burner "The protection system is not a protection system as such, but simply a mechanism for stopping the playback of music."

Things will get interesting indeed if the "Content Producers" and "Hardware Manufacturers" start throwing lawsuits back and forth at each other.

Hang on people, things are going to get interesting in the Entertainment Arena in the coming months...

these corporate titans all have more intrigue than a family of renaissance Borgias - but that works in peoples' favor. they have their profit motives and yes they're interested in uniting around their own common standards to put an end to “home distribution”. but anything that destabilizes those prospective plans is a very good thing from my vantage point. let them spend their resources fighting amongst themselves while we use ours improving the very apps they're tied up in knots about.

Thumbs up

Of course, JS I can definitely agree with that 100%.

"They're" all starting to remind me of a big ole basket of live crabs. All scrambling one on top of each other, each crab willing to rip the other crabs' arms off in the process - ALL trying to find a way out of that darned basket lol!

Now, quit hoggin' the popcorn - better yet I'll pop some more 'cause this will definitely get more and more interesting as time goes by.

'em!

I've said elsewhere and I'll say it here: watching the industrial/entertainment complex eat itself is sheer entertainment
