we did it!

2 networks, running concurrently.

(well one is blank, does that still count? )

By blank do you mean the new network doesn't have a name?
I'd say that still counts. It opens the doors to WASTE network linkage. If a node from each network acts as a supernode conected to other supernodes in a public network, proxying searches and file transfers, then theoretically you could link 2,500 nodes together with no more than two degrees of separation.

yeah, by blank i mean a network w/out a name. i don't see why we can't do the same with a named network or three (i have 3 running right now), but until i get a connection w/2 named nets i can't actually say it's possible.

multi & i would've done it right then - but i had to make dinner.

News from Dawn's pool.

Secret networks protect music swappers

Waste aiding community.
Powell Fraser

They are the country clubs of the file-sharing world, exclusive Internet networks that require knowing the right people and having a wealth of content on your hard disk to get into the clique.

These private file-swapping networks have surfaced just as the music industry has been granted dozens of subpoenas seeking the names of those who trade copyrighted material on popular services such as Kazaa, Imesh, and Gnutella.

The private networks are open to smaller groups of perhaps 20 to 30 people who liberally share music, television shows, movies and computer programs. Members of such networks believe they can avoid legal consequences because their identities and actions are masked with the same technology used to protect online credit card transactions.

"You've got the right set of early adopters, people that are involved in the community who are evangelizing it," said Travis Kalanick, whose MP3 search engine Scour was sued and shut down by the music industry. "It's going to be there if and when there is a mass exodus from networks like Kazaa and Gnutella."

Kalanick and others say the private networks are the future of online music swapping.

Not if the music industry can help it, said Jonathan Lamy, a spokesman for the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

While he would not reveal specifics of which services would be targeted, Lamy offered a warning for private network users.

"If users think that any particular service guarantees their anonymity, they're wrong," he said. "There are ways to determine a user's identity."

But Jim Lowrey, an expert in network encryption, said it would be difficult for outsiders to break through the encryption to see who is using the private sharing services.

"You'll know they're talking, but you won't know what they're saying. It's quite impossible to crack the algorithms," said Lowrey, whose company, Endeavors Technology, is designing a file-sharing system for corporate clients.

Private networks such as Waste, DirectConnect, and even basic chat clients promise to remedy all these issues. The difficulty is finding them.

Some message boards help users find each other and set up networks. Others turn to chat rooms or recruit friends on college campuses to form a network.

And even when a user finally charms his way into getting an encryption key, giving him access to a network such as Waste, other members' identities are not revealed until they also decide they trust the newcomer, Kalanick explained.

"You essentially will have to 'socialize' your way into a network," Kalanick said.

Kalanick said the extreme focus on security is meant to keep outsiders -- and copyright lawyers -- out.

"RIAA may be better off penetrating al Qaeda," he said.

the thing that i dont like about waste is that if by chance you should get disconnected, the files that you were currently dl go to the bottom of the queue and you start dl something else

We all have our lil bones of contention with it but for a program that's so fresh-from-the-field, it works extremely well.

Some fine tuning of the program is definitely needed and it can only improve from here on out which is encouraging. I'm sure someone(s), somewhere is very working hard to do just that...............

Default Getting Connected

Hi! I've really been getting into the Waste thing in the last few days, set it up on two of my home machines but of course need others to connect to as well. A couple of the names on here look familiar, and maybe you've seen some of my posts on another file-sharing board and dslreports.com? username: ninersfan.

Anyway, been trying to get some of the people over there to get involved and got some interest but for the most part seems rather lukewarm.

Couple messages I posted so you know where I am coming from anyway:

can you please add me for access to one of your guys servers?
From the looks of this thread you must have 2 or 3 going, encouraging to read the good words!

Thanks!

hi wasted and welcome to the p2p zone at napsterites underground!

i saw your post as ninersfan. nice to see you here.

our experience with the public phase of waste ended about 6 weeks ago. we shut down the open network experiments and moved into the present phase, always-on private groups of about a dozen members. these groups have formed around people who for the most part have known each other on a daily basis for some time, usually on the order of years. content isn't the main issue with the group, familiarity is. as such, getting into one is based solely on the comfort level within the group. in today's unique climate trust is its own commodity.

my advice as always is to start your own named network and pm that name (and whatever ip is needed to enter) to anyone you feel you'd like to have as a member and see what develops.

in other words, instead of waiting on an established group, start your own - and call for users. i think there are many people who'd like to join.

naturally, any technical advice you might need we'll try to accomodate.

hello wasted...i've seen your posts at st8dogs. your willingness to share with others or set up a sharing type community is admirable. hehe that's all i basically have to say.

ps..this message was a kind of long-winded way to say welcome to the board.

hey wasted

goldie..
theres an experimental network we can try starting up again..we just got to sync up sometime..

the trick i believe is establish connection
with the new group..then restart waste with your profile/s to your already established group/s
it looks like wasted has one all ready to go
