Default CARP Compromise May Stall In Senate

According to sources the CARP compromise worked out last weekend and passed Monday in the House may be headed for a moratorium in the Senate if the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) has its way. At issue is wording in this problematic bill that assures parties no precedent is being set, that when the law expires the RIAA can’t use the agreement to force congress to continue it. The NAB doesn’t want members to pay at all, nor should they have to. Some webcasters however, afraid of the alternatives, are urging listeners to contact their senators and let them know they support the bill, especially people from Vermont and Kansas where the senators are from, rumor has it, who’re dragging their feet.

My advice? Don’t bother. Let the bill die. The more I see of the present legislation the less I like. The compromise is so flawed I’d rather see them back at the table hammering out a better one.
