Porter Goss Unexpectedly Resigns Amid White House Shake-Up
May 5, 2006, 12:15 PM PDT

WASHINGTON — CIA Director Porter Goss abruptly resigned on Friday. Goss' resignation leaves the agency at a time where it is still fighting to regain confidence after numerous intelligence failures before and after the attacks on 9/11.
hmmm....just why would CIA Director Porter Goss resign on a Friday afternoon, out of a clear blue sky, with absolutely no warning? could it possibly be related to the next GOP scandal just now bubbling to the surface:

Quote:
"Federal authorities are investigating allegations that a California defense contractor arranged for a Washington area limousine company to provide prostitutes to convicted former congressman Randy 'Duke' Cunningham (R-Calif.) and possibly other lawmakers, sources familiar with the probe said yesterday."...

...The wider picture, involving possibly other congressmen involved with prostitutes, emerged Thursday in an appearance by Calbreath of The Union-Tribune on MSNBC's Joe Scarborough show, in which he suggested that as many as six lawmakers could eventually be named. The Union-Tribune earlier this month won a Pulitzer for its coverage of the Cunningham case....
maybe Goss just wanted to spend a little more time with his family. or maybe it has something to do with the fact that Goss's #3 man, Executive Director Kyle "Dusty" Foggo, is now under investigation for being on the receiving end of the hookers-&-poker parties that were being provided for GOP lawmakers and staffers...and maybe Goss is, too:

Quote:
Last week, Ken Silverstein of the Harper's magazine blog reported that, according to sources, the FBI was scrutinizing a former lawmaker "who now holds a powerful intelligence post." That fueled blog speculation that the former lawmaker was Goss, who once chaired the House Intelligence Committee.
this, the latest in a series of ethical atrocities from Washington has it all: hookers, gambling, cash, limos, yachts, the Watergate hotel (must be a nostalgia thing)...and of course, the Republican party.

well, the spin is that Goss could no longer abide John Negroponte, the director of National Intelligence (or vice versa) - the fact that the Prez stood by his side and praised him as he resigned would support this angle. but the bubbles about his attendance at the poker parties with convicted GOP Congressman Duke Cunningham continue to float to the surface:

Quote:
CIA boss Goss is cooked

Tied to contractor's poker parties -
hints of bribes & women

BY RICHARD SISK and JAMES GORDON MEEK
DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU

WASHINGTON - CIA Director Porter Goss abruptly resigned yesterday amid allegations that he and a top aide may have attended Watergate poker parties where bribes and prostitutes were provided to a corrupt congressman.
possibly the Cunningham scandal gave Negroponte the ammo he needed to throw Goss under the bus?
Quote:
Negroponte "apparently had no confidence" in Goss, and Bush's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board was also "very alarmed by problems at the CIA," said a congressional source involved in oversight of U.S. spy agencies.

"Supposedly the \[Cunningham\] scandal was the last straw," the source said. "This administration may be on the verge of a major scandal."
what, yet another major scandal?

yeah, probably not a good choice of words. scandal implies some extraordinary or unusual lapse of legal or ethical judgement, whereas this kind of story is just another day in the culture of corruption that pervades our GOP-controlled government.

Yeah, non-scandal is a much better choice of words.

If Goss was involved in this do you think Josh Bolten would have had Bush backslapping and high-fiving him at a press conference? Bolten isn't stupid.
