Default What is the current state of encrypted P2P?

When WASTE hit the scene there was a lot of talk of programs like it being the new hot thing.

Well it's been quite some time since that happened, what is the current state of private P2P network software? There is still the original WASTE but there was some talk of the 1.5 version not being compatable with the older versions.

What other options are out there that people have heard of or tried?

have been using waste 1.5 beta3 with another mesh for quite sometime now without any noticeable ill effects

been pretty slack with tor ,ants ,mute ..etc
I did give ants a shot a little while ago but got nothing from it
it seemed to be tied into with some sort of IRC channel (bot?)

If there hasn't been a lot of talk about darknets, maybe that's by design. It means one of two things, a) there aren't any new private p2p apps being used, or b) they are being used and they're being kept secret. Either way we'll only hear about them from someone who knows someone who knows something about it.

Malk's question was about encrypted p2p which might be strictly interpreted to include only virtual private networks. Assuming there is also interest in open anonymous networks:

MUTE seems to enjoy fairly good popularity. According to project's Sourceforge homepage some 400 people download it daily, and it has been downloaded already 800,000 times over the past 3 years. (Despite of this the poor developer has managed to collect only $43.98 in donations to support his work. )
