Default Brand New Key

i got interested, and found this site about Melanie, someone who i knew nothing about, and after reading a good bit i decided shes about a cool chick. the following is a bit i stole that is a good example of what kind o girl she is...

My Worst Concert
by Steve Elm

Melanie was scheduled to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London.. I was so excited as I had tickets. It had been nearly seven years since I had last seen her.

I was already anticipating cancellation because I have a history of cancelled Melanie shows...either she was having a baby, or some other reason...

Anyway, I venture out on this rainy autumn night, full of anticipation....

I get to the site, full of excitement and trepidation, only to have my fears realized...there were signs on the locked doors saying "Melanie concert cancelled"...My heart sunk..."I knew it"...

I stood around for a few minutes, checking out the reaction of the other saddened punters...many of whom showed no indication that they were leaving...

I thought "stupid hippies...the show is cancelled. What do you think? She's going to show up anyway and sing on the steps for free?"

So, I left...got the tube home.... The next morning I wake up, open the newspaper, and there is a picture of Melanie singing for her fans on the steps of the Royal Albert hall for free...THAT was my worst Melanie concert.

Steve Elm

....................

and ive always love the song brand new key...

You might want to check this one out as well:

"Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)"

She wrote it as a tribute to the audience at Woodstock who braved the weather to watch her perform (in the rain).

She is backed by The Edwin Hawkins Singer who are known in there own right for the earlier "Oh Happy Day"

I've been listening to music long enough that I remember when "Brand New Key" was new!
Quote:
CANDLES IN THE RAIN

Little sisters of the sun lit
Candles in the rain
Fed the world on oats and raisins
Candles in the rain
Lit the fire to the soul
Who never knew his friends
Meher Baba lives again
Candles in the rain
To be there is to remember
Lay it down again
Lay down
Lay down
Lay it down again
Men can live as brothers
Candles in the rain...

LAY DOWN (CANDLES IN THE RAIN)

(chorus)
Lay down lay down, let it all down
Let your white birds smile up at the
Ones who stand and frown
Lay down lay down, let it all down
Let your white birds smile up at the
Ones who stand and frown

We were so close, there was no room
We bled inside each others wounds
We all had caught the same disease
And we all sang the songs of peace

chorus

So raise the candles high cause if you
Don't we could stay black against the night
Oh raise them higher again and if you
Do we could stay dry against the rain

chorus

We were so close, there was no room
We bled inside each others wounds
We all had caught the same disease
And we all sang the songs of peace
Some came to sing, some came to pray
Some came to keep the dark away

So raise the candles high
Cause if you don't we could stay
Black against the sky
Oh oh raise them higher again
And if you do we could stay dry against the rain

chorus

Cool Melanie Safka Chronology

Quote:
Buddah (UK) Publicity to DJs April 1970

Last year's Woodstock Festival will be remembered as an event where young people got together to listen to music - peacefully.

It also influenced the audience and musicians alike into commemorating the concerts with songs and words.

One record has become the epitaph to the festival and its people. It is "Lay Down" by Melanie with the Edwin Hawkins Singers.

Melanie wrote "Lay Down" right after her performance at Woodstock. As she started singing the rain started falling - but rather than leave and take shelter the people huddled together with jackets over their heads.

And as darkness set in, they lit candles and the reality of the moment became this song.

Alexander Beetle
A. A. Milne\Melanie Safka

I had a little beetle
So that beetle was his name
And I called him Alexander
And he answered just the same
And I put him in a matchbox
And I kept him all the day
But nanny let my beetle out
Yes nanny let my beetle out
She went and let my beetle out
And beetle ran away

She said she didn't mean it
And I never said she did
She said she wanted matches
And she just took off the lid
She said I mustn't worry
And I really mustn't mind
That there's lots and lots of beetles
The she's certain we could find
She said I mustn't worry
But it's difficult to catch
An excited sort of beetle
You've mistaken for a match

If we looked in all the places
That a beetle might be near
And we made the kind of noises
That a beetle likes to hear
And I heard a kind of something
And I gave a sort of shout
It was a beetle house
And Alexander beetle coming out
It was Alexander beetle
I'm as certain as can be
And he had that kind of look as though
He thought it might be me

And he had that kind of look as though
He thought he ought to say
"I'm really very sorry that I tried to run away"
And nanny's very sorry too
Cause you know what she did
And she's writing Alexander
Very blackly on the lid
So nan and me are friends because
It's difficult to catch
An excited Alexander
You've misstaken for a match

Now, that brings back some memories....Alexander Beetle is from a book of poems by A. A. Milne (of Winnie The Pooh fame) called now Now We Are Six....

and I still remember it coz I got the book when I was six and 30 years later, when my son was six, I used to read it to him....

Now We Are Six

When I was one, I had just begun
when I was two, I was barely new
when I was three, I was hardly me
when I was four, I was not much more
when I was five, I was just alive
but now I'm six
I'm as clever as clever
and I think I'll stay six
for ever and ever

- A.A. Milne

funny what you remember, isn't it?
