Cool So how many P2P apps have you tried?

Here's 101 P2P Apps that are out there, some of which we know well, how many others have you seen and tried?.

(Feel free to comment on those in the link.)

Is there anything innovative or outstanding in any one particular P2P App that you would like to see in the final P2P solution, which is a must have and isn't available at the moment?.

I know Jackspratts has seen around 200 apps or so, it'd be good to compile a list of what else members have seen out there, past and present.

Maybe much later we can rate which is best.

I know of most of these apps in the 101 list. These are apps I have saved on my pc or have backed up on cd that I currently use or have used at one time:

Napster - No explanation needed

Napigator - Nice enhancement to napster app for access to opennap servers.

Abe's MP3 Finder - One of the first ones I used. Not much for finding popular music.

Audiognome - Great app. My favorite.Between the PNP and opennap server connctions, lots of music files available.

Audiogalaxy - Good for finding rare stuff.

Bearshare - Errattic connections to their servers. Its hit and miss.

CleanLimewire - The Best gnutella client IMO. Nice improvement over the spyware versions. Lots of successful downloads.

ComTry Music Downloader - An old app I use to use. Together with gozilla, this app scoured the net in search of ftp or http sites.

CuteMx - Great mp3 and other media file app. On a peer with Napster until it shut down.

Direct Connect - Nice app lots to be found but some of the requirements to get on to the servers is sometimes 60GB minimum. My HD alone is not big enough for some of these minimums. Server ops tend to be elitist on these servers.

Dopeflish - Tried it once, uninstalled it. Forgot why though.

Edonkey - When able to connect, lots of apps to be found there.

FileNavigator - Good client when napster was in its heyday. and Music City servers before they switched to the kazaa platform. Also connecteded opennap servers. An excellent all in one to connect to the nap, musiccity and opennap network. Havent used this one for a long time.

Freebase - Used it when it first came out. Nice app that never took off and no longer available.

FTP - Public and Private. Great way to fileshare.

Grokster - Morpheus/Kazaa clone.

Gnutella - Never able to connect with the .50 or the .056 versions.

Gnotella - Same as gnutella.

Gnucleus - Excellent gnutella app. Would like to use it but crashes ever since I installed XP

Hotline - Did not like it. Messy GUI. Unable to connect. Did not take the time with this app.

iMesh - Nice app. Comparable to Limewire(not CleanLimeWire)

Kazaa - Good app when able to find >128k mp3's and movies.

Limewire - Good gnutella client. I Prefer the CleanLimewire version though.
MP3 Wolf - An early app for me. Could only find music I never heard or liked.

MyNapster - FileNavigator clone.

Morpheus - Like Kazaa minus spyware. Could be next on the apps that go down the tubes via pay route.

Napamp - Winamp Plugin. Great for leeching. No longer useful since napster is dead.

Newtella - Another gnutella app that was had difficulty connecting to gnutella network.

Napster Fast Search (NFS) - Powerful search Tool. Able to connect to 250 servers at once. I haven't used this one in a while.

Rapigator - FileNavigator clone.

Scour Exchange - Good as Napster was, more stable with more multimedia file choices that was shutdown.

Scour Media Agent - app that scoured the net for ftp and http sites. Pre Scour Exchange.

Songspy - Excellent app for finding mp3's. The one drawback was that it was bloated with unneeded features causing crashes. They came out with a new beta that is light of the bloat but I read somewhere that these karma points could be making their way into the riaa's hands. Don't know if thats the case or not. Have'nt used this app in quite a few months
.
Swaptor - a FileNavigator clone.

WinMx - One of the Best out there for mp3 sharing. v2.6 is the best version IMO. Still testing beta 3.

Xolox - I used this for a little while when it first came out. when connected, lots of files to be shared. Inability to connect consistently made me uninstall this app. I didn't like that you had to manually download a server list and put it in the program file directory. No app should do this. Server updates IMO should be a seemless task.

I also use metasearch engines and http where p2p is not an option.

As for future p2p apps, I would like to see one come out that gives you the option to connect to any network at one time or simultaneously. An all-in-one p2p solution.

Brows Me?

Tried loads..

Napster, of course Crap no resume but good for chat

Imesh, fiddly damn hard to get to grips with

Bearshare, kept crashing, very clichy set of users?

Limewire, lasted a day, before dumped, cant remember why now?

Edonky, sat for two days trying to find files, and download them

Audiognome (early version) good but lacked individual contact

Audiogalaxy, didn't know about the spyware free version, removed and system re-formatted PDQ?

Winmx 1.81, Ah now this IS a system with potential, great stuff on it, masses of files, apps etc.

Winmx 2.01, same as before, lot more stable.

Winmx 2.5, ditto, never crashed in weeks of use.

Morpheus, after the MusicCity servers vanished on WinMx.
Crappy interface, listing screens didn't stay where they were set
downloads real slow, very dangerous if sharing content not carefully controlled, Sorting lists caused crashes, popups likewise, needed a Memory watcher to stopp memory gobbling causing crashes is 2 hours, couldn't leave it on overnight at all.

Winmx 2.6, stable, lovely display, total control of bandwidth on upload/download, many many users, WPNP network a lot more secure than Morpheus, still eats memory a little, needs memory watcher, to run for a week at a time (I go away a lot)
Still has some features not implemented, like throttle controls on individual uploads, bot hopefully version 3 will complete the best of all P2P clients (In my opinion).

Blubster, tried it as it was new and different, workd fine with its smaller user base, idea for 56k dialups, crashed viciously on my cable system, never found out why?

Audiognome, latest patched version, loads of servers, usefull for finding servers for use with WinMx, servers that actually seem to be there more than a few hours? (how long does it take for the trippy server file to get out of date? A day or so?)
Chat is fine, search probably not as good as WinMx though, loads of content, all sorts (with patch) else MP3 and a few others only.

So as you can gather, WinMx my favourite, now 3.0 is here, what else is there to say?

Napster had a splendid resume feature (which worked 95% of the time for me) in it's first few bet-- err first few versions of its 2nd beta, somewhere between v2b1 and v2b5.

Resume somewhat works on WinMX, but most of the time I just re-search and find a quicker ping to d/l from and start over.

Oh, I've used:

Scour - loved this, bypassed e-mailing them back and forth
Napster - acquired probably 75% of my tunes, chat was cool
Morpheus - hated it... bloaty... reminds me of ICQ
Audiognome - a little confusing, couldn't find semi-popular titles
WinMX - liking it muay mucho, wish I could figure out the chat rooms
IRC - can find virtually anything, secure DCC's, chat heaven, but lack of an "interface" makes it tiresome

But really...I haven't used that many things. In my first college odyssey I used Scour Media Agent with a friend of mine - you never knew, though, when things were going to time out, error, etc. A lot of the time it would take 10+ tries to get something. Things weren't nearly as available as they would be on Napster. Speaking of which, shortly thereafter we found Nap, and just about died when it would hit 100,000 files available.

When I finally got a computer at home Nap was the first thing I used (2.0 BETA 6 by then - May 2000), and saw availability continue to rise, and eventually, ebb into nonexistence. Late in the game with Nap I got Napigator.

I continued to use Napigator with WinMX, which I started using right around the start of 2001 with 1.81 beta. If I ever get connectivity restored I'll use that duo again.

Sometime in the summer I tried Morpheus out since so many people were giving raves about it. It wasn't for me, though, and I quickly ditched it. That's about it, really.

So far I've used:

Napster (of course)

iMesh - fast speeds, no probems at all. My favorite by a long shot.

Winmx - I don't have luck here, seems no matter what I am trying to get, I sit queued for eternity.

Morpheous - SLOW, with lost downloads

Blubster - simple to use, but it seems the other people must cut me off for some reason, even tho I'm sharing ??

Edonkey - good for programs (as napho said it would be)

Audiogalaxy - not the real one tho, I have the one that piggy backs from audiogalaxy. Havent used it yet

Audiognome - I think I still have it, tho I havent used it in eons

I think I have more, but I'll have to check when I'm at home

I've tried close to 100.
Some had names like Taxee (only 1 other person was on) ,Ohaha, Yoink ,Filerogue,Swapnut and every other obscure one.
Scour was my fave because it was 2nd to Napster for music and had movies and programs too. I also used Napster and Imesh when I first got the putr.

Red face 56k - need I say more LOL

Napster was the very first app I ever used - LOVED IT until the very end.

Bearshare - PITA POS, hated it. I'd gotten maybe 10 crappy mp3s off of it. Loaded with ware and when I decided to dump it, I wound up having to do a reformat to get rid of savenow and onflow.

Aimster - YUCK, I hated the buddy list thing (that WAS the buddy list system wasn't it).

MusicCity (opennap days) - LOVED IT.
MusicCity (P2P) - LOVE IT much success with old time radio shows.

WinMX (opennap) - LOVE IT.
WinMX (P2P 2.6) - LOVE IT but having problems getting my old time radio shows, I'm finding more variety on Morpheus.
WinMX (P2P beta 3) - so far so good, I like it! Not much to graze on now but expect bigger and better things in the coming days/weeks.

Audiogalaxy - Absolute best for out of circ, rare music. The love affair was over after bloat/wear slowed my 56k to an even more comatose state.
Spyware free Audiogalaxy - can't wait to give it a whirl (perhaps I can fall in love again )!!

Gnutella - Nope, nada, nyet - didn't work good for me and prompty trashed.

Blubster - initially intrigued enough to dl the app. but have yet to install it.

I'd also like to see a whole next generation of applications offering universal connectibility across all the P2P platforms (I know, I know - a gal CAN dream can't she LOL).

Here's the stuff I've played with:

Morpheus - current software finding tool for myself.
Audio Galaxy - current MP3 finding tool

eDonkey 2000 - installed twice, never thrilled with it for some reason that escapes me now.
Napigator - was great for getting on non Nap servers back in the day
Direct Connect - neat but nothing special
FileNavigator - see above

Share Sniffer <- heh not what I would call a sharing problem - more of a scanner looking for open 139.

AudioGnome - It set me free from Napster :)
BearShare - had problems scaling in the eariler versions - haven't played with in recently.
SongSpy - More you share the more you can download, nice concept - had a little trouble getting going at first but in the beginning the programmers were very good about responding to suggestions.
Hotline - Granddaddy of warez and appz
Freenet - not quite in the same field as the rest of these, but very cool all the same.
Gnutella - famous for the scaling problems

Or course there's IRC as well which still seems to yeild the highest quality of tunes and videos.

Some thoughts about these programs in general:

Don't try to scan my whole system for MP3s - that annoys the hell out of me. With almost 100gig of networked drives the last thing I need is to sit and wait while you decide what I can and cannot share. I have tossed more beta releases into the trash because of these one small thing than any other reason.

I see this is more a file sharing list then a P2P list so I will respond in kind (fun thread! hehe).

In order of first use...

IRC - The first and only; with multi-server support in 6.0 mIRC this will keep getting bigger (which kinda sucks). Plus lets remember that IRC is what gave Mr. Fanning the idea in the first place. #mp3passion on Undernet is still the best place for high quality prerelease albums.

FTP - Always handy. Ratio servers made the scene suck ass. (Just an opinion; hehe). Also, FTP servers always had crap music. (Unless you actually needed all the Led Zeppelin and Limp Bizcuit albums)

Warez Web Sites - POP UP PORN! MALICIOUS JAVASCRIPT! CONSTANT REDIRECTIONS TO 'TOP 50' SITES! WHOO-HOO. Man, I don't miss those days at all.

MP3Wolf (RIP) - This thing sucked ass. It crawled the web looking for MP3s for you; it took forever, most of the links were dead, and just generally sucked ass.

Napster (RIP) - Impressive. It blew open the availability of hard to find albums so I'm quite grateful to it. I avoided it for a while until I couldn't ignore it anymore.

Napigator (RIP?) - I never liked the Napster client and was happy when Audiognome came around so I could throw out Napster altogether. Their server list was pretty damn important though.

Gnutella (.56) (RIP) - Groovy. This one will be for the history books along with Napster. But everyone, please STOP USING IT THAT OLD ASSED CLIENT! hehe

Scour (RIP) - Decent for videos (back when they weren't even Divx yet, hehe). Song selection always kinda blew though.

Audiognome - Always had a buggy interface but some nice folks were involved with it for a while. hehe. Dunno bout new versions or PNP though. Seems like WinMX is a smarter bet since it's a less clunky interface and they offer their own network PLUS the opennap list.

Hotline - FTP plus chat for MAC users. That should tell you all you need to know. Hard to use, server lists have to be given to you by someone who knows, not only that but you can't use the latest client to get on the good servers, you need an early version. Like I said, for MAC users.

Gnotella (RIP?) - This client always sucked. Despite their claims I thought it actually made .56 WORSE. I hope it's dead.

WinMX - It's a fine proggy but Morpheus and Audiogalaxy blow it away for different reasons. Maybe when both of those are shut down I'll switch back.

Bearshare - Started out well enough and the developer was very involved with the forum and took suggestions... but XoloX and the latest Gnucleus blow it away. Also, spyware accusations were handled horribly by the developer to the point where I don't trust him and wouldn't download any new versions.

Warez Forums - Always fun when you got one that's going smoothly. I don't right now and can't be bothered testing all the different ones out there but... when ya got a good one it's great.

Morpheus - Decent amount of games/appz/music/videos available. I'm pretty happy with it as I've gotten 2 television shows I love in completion on Morpheus and I couldn't find them anywhere else. There's always an advantage to the network most everyone is using and that's Morpheus right now. Enough can't be said for tricking users into running a P2P at start up and not closing it when they hit the X. Sure, it's sneaky, sure, it's mean but it's also why there is so much shit on Morpheus and Napster.

Gnucleus - Open source gnutella client that keeps improving.

SongSpy - I wasn't impressed by the selection. The Karma points made me feel creepy. I uninstalled.

XoloX - the best gnutella client yet (most stable, least resource grabby). Dunno where it's at now though; heard zeropaid grabbed it; I don't like zeropaid too much.

AudioGalaxy - Happily does the same trick as Morhpeus and Napster so a shitload of music is available. This is my preferred method for getting MP3s now (much wider selection then Morpheus which has an already wide selection). Some pretty vicious spyware in the latest version, but there are ways around it if you research here or on Zeropaid.

Direct Connect - Groovy for warez stuff. Buggy, really high minimum shares, and newbies are gonna have problems connecting at all I bet. Still good for warez stuff though. This/Audiogalaxy/Morpheus/IRC are what I'm using right now.

I'd like to try eDonkey and Freenet but I currently have no reason to. If any of the 4 I'm using right now run into problems eDonkey and Freenet will be where I go next.

yayaya

I only tried the most popular of the listed ones,

- Napster, (...)
- morpheus/Kazaa/grokster,
- Audiogalaxy, (also used other GUI than the official one, funny but useless most of the time)
- winmx, (never liked it)
- edonkey, (i dont care about divx so i dont like edonkey)
- napigator, (... never managed to dl a song only with napigator )
- rapigator, (allows using html code on the chatrooms )
- direct connect, ('cool' communities, easy and funny to launch a new server)
- scour exchange, (which is dead but i liked it)
- cute MX (dont remember if this one is dead... i think yes, the same sort of prog than scour)
- aimster, (launched it a few times, but not a vast choice in MP3 so i stopped using it)
- file navigator, (same as rapigator [without the HTML])
- xolox, (easy to use... the official one is "blocked")
- limewire, (i HATE JAVA)
- imesh, (spywares ! but not so bad...)
- gnotella, (i dont like gnutella network)
- audiognome, (i used it for months and years, i loved it, the best opennap client IMHO)
- Abe's MP3 Finder, (an old one, is it still alive ? remember it was difficult to find something to dl)
- a few opennap clients dled on opennap.sourceforge.net

as i only search MP3 i prefer Audiogalaxy for its choice.

Ever heard about Slavanap ?

Flipr, for sharing legal stuff, too much unstable, the beta-test period is finished and actually flipr is closed, it was cool to discover unpopular artists.

Soulseek, only good for dling electronic music.

Freenet, Espra, interesting project, but not so easy to use

Napster : Assured it's place in history by being the first app to get its shit together and connect lots of people globaly. Pre 2.5 versions were the best because you could resume. Was really annoying if you were on 56k and it's only true plus point was when the servers were linked.

Audiognome : The name makes me sick still to this day....could of been the #1 file sharing application now resides in the 'where are they now file' due to a bunch of fuckwitts and egos. During it's peak period (0.66 - 0.96) was quite simply the best way to find pretty much any mp3...and it resumed. Oh, and it had the minus operator in the search string....which was absolutely essential for wading through the amount of shit that was floating around of opennap at the time.

WinMX : I've downloaded about 4 mp3s from winMX in the 6 + months i've had it...an absolute nightmare for a 56k user. Could be the lovliest program ever....but that doesn't mean shit if you can't download anything with it.

Morp/kaz/etc : Bargain basement file trading, shit rips, viruses, porn, incomplete files, badly named files....the program itself is quite nice i suppose in a shit sort of way...and it does its job quite well...the search limits and shit like that are a pain in the ass and it's next to useless for finding rare stuff.

Abes MP3 Finder : Ugh i used this too...for like 3 days....ghastly little thing.

Scour : Never got connected...never downloaded anything....

gnutella/bearshare/etc : Once again...may be great...but i wouldn't know...i'm on a 56k...and get disconnected every 2 hours...like i have the time to wait for one of their searches to finish.

Direct Connect : Well my mate managed to download me a copy of reason from there so it gets a plus point for that....thats about the only plus point i can make though.

IRC : Never liked IRC for downloading...probably because i get disconnected every 2 hours and then have to get to the back of the queue again.

FTP : Nothing better than saying 'hey you broadband bastard...go and download me these songs, throw them on your FTP and i'll download them later'

Websites : I've found 1 or 2 half decent pre-release/new-release mp3 sites over the years....thats about all i can say...who wants new stuff anyway? it's all shite...

Audiogalaxy : Now that i've downloaded pretty much everything i'd set out for at the beginning of my mp3 journey...i am now finding myself looking for really really obscure shit to finish my collections of certain artists...audiogalaxy has found stuff for me that no other p2p application ever has....the interface is shit, it's full of spyware, logging onto the server can be a pain at peak hours....but all of that is worth it if you can find one person in hungaria who has the limited edition test pressing double groove b side flexi disc dub remix that you are looking for.

all clients are much of a muchness really...the only real motivating fact for anyones preferance of P2P client is 'can i get the shit i want with it?'

now for some people....well you could fucking ask jeeves 'where do i download the new limp 182 feat brittany aguilera mp3?' and get all the hits you'd ever need. But for me it's not always which client has the most users (although thats always nice)...its which client allows me to filter out as many of these 14 year old bastards as possible to get to the stuff i do want. A combination of cddb and audiogalaxy do the trick for me

nice thread

I'll keep my post sweet and simple:

Napster
Napigator
CuteMX
Audiogalaxy
Morpheus
IRC
Audiognome
Song Spy
Limewire
Gnutella
Scour
Direct Connect

I think LV put it the best though with this:

Quote:

When I finally got net connection in the dorm I copied three p2p progs from a friend of mine and I tried them all: LimeWire (1.6 I think), MyNapster, and WinMX. I stuck with the latter until I ran into morpheus.

Being fed up and pretty much sick of the "tradeonlys", I entirely switched to morph. I even tried KazAa for a few days, but didn'l like the colors. I only learned later about the spyware that it installed, but since I use Adware and RegCleaner regularly, found no traces of it. Then they nuked the forum.

To be honest, towards the end (meaning mostly december), I only used it because of its excellent forum. Files were harder and harder to get, and I uploaded 20 times as much as I managed to download.

Anyway, now I'm experimenting with eDonkey. That reminds me, that back in the old forum someone posted something like "Morpheus sucks, eDonkey rules". Before annoying the dude because of its manners, I decided to give it a try. Took 3 hours to share, and finally I ended up connected to one server with 20 users. So I removed it. Now that I gave it a second try, what I often read on Zeropaid and various forums applies. You have to learn how to use it efficiently. I said I'm not a "techie", however, it took me one day to do that. In combination with sharereactor and eDonkeyBot, I never realized that such selection of files is possible. If anyone interested, I might post about my experience with the donkey, maybe it can help someone.

Before that, I forgot to mention, I tried out the new "multiple-source downloads" LimeWire, which actually was a fake - by multiple they mean dl from one source at a time but if you get disconnected, another source (IF you are lucky) will take its place. Then I found XoloX (the ZP version), and began to like its clean interface, REAL multiple source downloads very much.

I read some really pessimistic posts about the future of morph, and I only want to add that I share that pessimism. When "share your creation, content, information and weknowwhat freely" begins to sound like "you can share them more freely if we can make a profit out of it" or "pay and share more freely" then I guess its time to move on. Not to mention that "shady" cloudload business. And as I said, I clang more to morpheus as its usefullness (meaning leech control, availability of files, search options, etc) would justify mainly because of some people associated with it.

That's all I guess.

Best wishes.
