Screwy Danish police shuts down eDonkey servers

In an unprecedented move, the Danish police has shut down at least six servers on the eDonkey2000 network on Monday (Heise has a German summary). eDonkey-servers are similar to Napster servers -- they do not host any actual files (and unlike Napster, eDonkey indexes much more than just music). Apparently, Danish police acted under pressure from the anti-piracy group, Antipiratgruppen. One of their representatives even accompanied the police raid on one eDonkey server operator's home.

The operator of that server, Siffan, has contacted an attorney and has gained access to a friend's computer. He is blogging the events as they unfold, currently in Danish, but English translations will follow soon. According to people on the #SiffansPlace IRC channel, 11 more eDonkey client users were "busted", but only 2 persons were charged. More details as they emerge.
Check the above InfoAnarchy link for updates.

the politicians are setting themselves up for unemployment, the media companies for boycotts. apparently you can have sex with a twelve year old in this country but it's now illegal to swap songs? priorities. something profoundly unbalanced there...

OMG -"Antipiratgruppen" - sounds dreary.

A typical 'germanism'. They just love to make new words by stringing a bunch smaller ones together.

Also, this may explain why I can't seem to connect to any donkey server all of a sudden. They're all taken down by either the police or the owners.

Europeans were a little smug about the US courts stopping filesharing. They felt that they were somehow exempt from copyright laws...think again. This is one big unified world.

btw pod- it's still easy to connect; just get a fresh server list every time you open eDonkey.

To me, it just sounds redundant!
