Someone has to test it before we know for sure. I can't connect to a superpeer just yet anyway. Typical Beatles search. |

cute logo's can take you far and these are up there with the cutest.
i was powerless to resist the little guys, i d/l'd the 9meg zip! i installed the jar file and it did evrything automaticaly. it didn't ask for a directory or anything. for all i know it runs right off the 'disc'. then it opened. i searched beatles and got some 650 hits at which point it froze. i ctrl alt'ed out and now i can't find the damn thing. there are a ton of folders for p2p downloads, like gnutella etc it installed but the exe is um, missing. ok, so then i figure maybe it does run straight off the jar. i unzip it again and this time i put it in pgm files and open it. it starts up, remembering my prefs. good sign. this time i run a search for something a little less popular thinking maybe the returns jammed it up. i do "groove armada" and i get some back. i click a few with several sources but get queud on each one. then it starts to cry (really, the little space dude pops up with a tear) and tells me it needs more "superpeers" and won't i please become one? geez, if i wanted to be a dad... to be con't. - js. |

I connected to a superpeer and did some uploading. The question is whose ip's did I see in a netstat search. Next phase will be to test it precisely.

Looks like a promising project although I would prefer to see it open source and non-commercial (even if the 5 second start-up screen in the free version is a minor inconvenience). Anyway, it is nice to see that the JXTA platform has matured to a point where practical p2p applications can be built on it.
The claim for total anonymity is a bit exaggerated IMO. As AweShucks pointed out, a third party in a position to do external traffic analysis could still track movements of the content (at least to some degree). Group sizes also matter: the bigger the group the better anonymity it can provide to its members. Thanks again to our vigilant and fearless special operations man! - tg

Now there's this.
MUTE protects your privacy by avoiding direct connections with your sharing partners in the network. Most other file sharing programs use direct connections to download or upload, making your identity available to spies from the RIAA and other unscrupulous organizations. http://mute-net.sourceforge.net/howPrivacy.shtml http://umn.dl.sourceforge.net/source....1_Windows.exe |

Thanks Napho. An interesting new application, certainly worth giving a go. An open source project with Windows, Linux and Mac clients available - not bad!
The routing solution resembles Freenet somewhat, although there is no pushing of content into the network in the same sense as in Freenet. As all traffic is routed through other nodes (to hide IP numbers) there is an inevitable bandwidth cost - so don't expect as fast downloads as with applications using direct file transfers. The network architecture also seems to be essentially flat (no supernodes) so it might not scale too well over a few hundred nodes. Anyway, MUTE is a nice new introduction to the p2p scene, making life yet again a little bit harder for the copyright nazis. - tg |

The # of hosts is starting to grow and when connected the ip's listed in the program are different than the ones I put in to connect. Whatever that means. Could be anything.

I connected and tried a download. Lost patience after a while. I'll get back to this program another time.

This thing is starting to resemble a real p2p. They even have a wide choice of Pet Shop Boys stuff.

The speed isn't exactly IRC-like but Mute is definitely growing. It's on version 0.2.1

This thing sounds interesting. It's from the eDonkey crew.
"Kdrive is a virtual global hard drive. Anyone can create a folder (or group) on the Kdrive. Once you create a folder you are the folder's admin. As the admin you can create accounts for other users to access your folder. Every folder has a unique name. Folders also act as chat rooms. You can talk to everyone who is also logged into the folder. You can also send private instant messages to anyone else." Between exchanging public keys, passwords, and public secure folders this should get multi's juices flowing. http://www.kdrive.com./security.html |
