Download the Blues, and More
http://wired.com/news/mp3/0,1285,44046,00.html
"The House of Blues Digital began selling over 8,000 downloadable tracks on their website after striking a deal with Rioport, which recently finalized deals with all five major labels to provide digital music downloads to third-party retailers. "

Circut City to check ID....
http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1006-200...96.html?tag=lh
"CHICAGO--Electronics retailer Circuit City will stop selling mature-rated video games to customers under age 17, joining a growing list of companies that have instituted the policy amid pressure from politicians.

The new policy was outlined in a letter this week to Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan and confirmed Wednesday by Circuit City spokesman Jim Babb.

Companies fight over CD listings, leaving the public behind
http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1005-201...html?tag=tp_pr
"Earlier this month, when he decided to record a new compact disc, Joe Smith followed a procedure he's done hundreds of times: Insert the CD, access the online music database and select songs using titles supplied by the database.

Yet this time, instead of displaying the usual song information, the popular CD-burning software made by Roxio delivered a different message. Roxio products were no longer supported by Gracenote's CD information service, which housed the database Smith had been using to match song and album titles with a disc placed into his computer--a collection entered in large part by individuals on the Net.

"Still, when it comes to public e- mail — message boards, mailing lists and chat rooms — Dr. Herring and other researchers have noted how typical speech patterns translate into online text. Her research shows that in online groups, "men tend to make strong assertions," disagree with others and use profanity, insults and sarcasm. By contrast, women tend to use mitigated assertions along with questions, offers, suggestions and polite expressions, she said. They are supportive and agreeable, peppering their messages with more emoticons and representations of laughter, like "haha," "heehee" and "lol," for "laughing out loud.""

Regulator challenges DVD zones
http://www.news.com.au/common/story_...55E421,00.html

"A REGIONAL zoning system that forces consumers to pay up to 20 per cent more for DVD movies is being challenged by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

The ACCC says major Hollywood studios have collaborated with the manufacturers of digital video disc players to prevent discs manufactured in the US, Europe or Asia from working in Australian machines.

Australian Competition and Consumer Commission

Aparently they've been thinking about doing this since last year:

good thing I don't buy my games at Circuit City . I don't buy that many M-rated games anyway, but when I do I don't want to be denied the privalege because of not being over 17 or having a parent with me.

Also from the article...

Quote:
Target, Kmart and Wal-Mart announced similar policies last year. Montgomery Ward and Sears, Roebuck and Co. had earlier agreed to stop selling the games altogether.
I never knew Sears sold video games! Never heard of this Roebuck and Co. place

and since Montgomery Ward is now bankrupt and gone I guess I won't be getting games from them anyway

also concerning the australian dvd situation. jader will definately want to stay on top of the development of this news topic.

Sears, Roebuck and Co.
http://academic.emporia.edu/smithwil...a/pieschl.html

"Sears, Roebuck and Co. has been a dominate force in the retail industry for many years, actually over a century, and has continually shown a dominance in the way that their business is run. However, in 1992 Sears realized an extreme financial loss and was faced with the possibility of a deteriorating business if changes were not made in many areas of the large retailer. Some of these changes would include a new Chief Executive Officer, Arthur C. Martinez. Under his leadership Sears, Roebuck and Co. would see an extreme turn around not only financially but also internally throughout the stores. Gladly, Sears, Roebuck and Co. was able to prevail and once again is starting to show dominance in the retail industry, founded now to be number two in the retail industry. I would like to first address Sears remarkable history, then the reasons and path to their rapid decrease in profits, and finally their road to their once again success. "

I was afraid of that...sears and roebuck being the same company

I enjoyed the read (never knew that Allstate Insurance is a subsidary of Sears)

Thanks for the news Malk!

I think this:

could be important enough to post as a separate warning post on the Underground side?
