What’s next, you ask? Well, now you’ve got to do what everybody does when they have an empire, of course. You’ve got to worry about it falling apart, mate!

The Roman Empire was also a republic based on a combination of oligarchy and democracy if I remember correctly.

Rome was a republic early in it's history, later a dictatorship. The Roman Empire was an empire; ruled from Rome.
