The following is an instant message exchange a former page says he had with Rep. Foley in 2003. Warning: sexually explicit language, reader discretion is advised. (Also, you may want to have something to vomit into handy as this is even more disgusting than the pic of Roth that Floyd posted.)

Personally, after reading this I was shocked and deeply dismayed that a congressman could be so nearly illiterate, even though in his defense he was probably typing with one hand.

While on a human level it's certainly sad and pathetic that Foley seems content to get his kicks in remote conversation with a young man who is obviously bored out of his mind by it, I find the slimier behaviour to be that of the page--a sick little fucker (sorry, a cast fetish is creepy) willing to string the old drooler along just enough to keep him interested--probably holding out to see if there might be a cash offer for a moustache ride at some point--while, it sounds like, he's simultaneously messaging three other more interesting people and playing a video game with someone in Tokyo.

Fitting the mold, he'll surely end up being a politician himself.

Just like the liberal mass media, you know he's not a page but you decide to label him such in accordance with your own bias and lack of ethics. Slimier indeed.

House Speaker Hastert's act continues to get sideswiped by inconvenient testimony fronm those around him. from today's Washington Post:
Quote:
Hastert maintains that he knew nothing of Foley's actions until last week, when the story first broke and Foley resigned. His stance contradicts that of House Majority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) and National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Thomas M. Reynolds (R-N.Y.), both of whom said they had informed Hastert this spring.

Palmer has resolutely said he had no earlier meeting with Foley, and other leadership aides have questioned the truthfulness of Fordham. Fordham quit his job as Reynolds's chief of staff last week after acknowledging that he had tried to persuade ABC News not to publish the salacious instant-message exchanges between Foley and two former pages.

Hastert's office contends that the first confrontation with Foley occurred in November 2005, when Shimkus, the head of the House Page Board, and then-House Clerk Jeff Trandahl took Foley aside to discuss what they termed "over-friendly" e-mails that Foley had sent to a Louisiana boy. Fordham's account not only pushed the matter back at least two years but also indicated that alarms over Foley's behavior had gone well beyond bland e-mails.

Sources close to Fordham say Trandahl repeatedly urged the longtime aide and close family friend to confront Foley about his inappropriate advances on pages. Each time, Foley pledged to no longer socialize with the teenagers, but, weeks later, Trandahl would again alert Fordham about more contacts. Out of frustration, the sources said, Fordham contacted Palmer, hoping that an intervention from such a powerful figure in the House would persuade Foley to stop.

Now, a second House aide familiar with Foley and his actions told The Washington Post yesterday that "Scott Palmer had spoken to Foley prior to November 2005." The aide spoke on the condition of anonymity because the matter is now the subject of a criminal investigation and the House ethics committee inquiry.
a couple of things are clear from all of this: Foley really was a predator and everybody in Hastert's office knew it. Hastert, as a former Illinois high school teacher and coach, has had specific training (under Illinois law) in recognizing the signs and symptoms of a sex offender's behaviour and chose to ignore it.
and every wingnut out there trying to shift blame elsewhere for this whole mess would go ballistic if their kid's high school principal handled a sexually predatory teacher the way that Hastert & Co. dealt with Foley.

edit: also begging for further scrutiny are the actions of NY Congressman Tom Reynolds, who persuaded Foley to run again even after he was aware of his actions, or Congressman Shimkus, head of the Page program, also aware of Foley's fondness for the young boys for whom he was responsible.

Longer Republican Cover-up

Foley Concerns Raised in 2000

House Speaker Hastert has suggested that e-mail awareness surfaced only last fall

Jonathan Weisman

A Republican congressman knew of disgraced former Rep. Mark Foley's inappropriate Internet exchanges as far back as 2000 and personally confronted Foley about his communications, according to an aide to the congressman.

Korenna Cline, a spokeswoman for Rep. Jim Kolbe, R-Ariz., confirmed Sunday that a former page showed the congressman Internet messages that had made the youth feel uncomfortable with the direction Foley, R-Fla., was taking their e-mail relationship.

The revelation pushes back by at least five years the date when a member of Congress has acknowledged learning of Foley's questionable behavior. A timeline issued by House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., suggested the first lawmakers to know -- Rep. John Shimkus. R-Ill., the chairman of the House Page Board, and Rep. Rodney Alexander, R-La. -- became aware of "over-friendly" e-mails only last fall. The new information also expands the universe of players in the drama beyond members either in leadership or on the page board.

A new poll by Newsweek found that more than half of Americans believe Hastert was aware of Foley's Internet communications with underage pages and tried to cover up Foley's actions.

Over and over again those that claim to be the holder of America's morals and virtues have been exposed as hypocrites and frauds. Republican Bill Bennett was outraged on America's moral decay while dropping $100,000 a night at various casinos. Newt Gingrich was outraged at President Clinton for the Lewinsky scandal while at the same time having an extramarital affair with a committee member. Republicans were outraged that President Clinton's Agriculture Secretary Mike Espy accepted gifts for sports tickets and trips to games. Espy resigned. Now you have members of Congress and White House staffers taking all kinds of gifts including sporting events and trips. Susan Ralston a former Jack Abramoff assistant quit her White House job as an aide to Karl Rove after it was disclosed she received tickets to sporting events and concerts from Abramoff. But the mother of them all is House Speaker Dennis Hastert and the Republican Congress covering up a potential sex offender Congressman Mark Foley's perverted instant messages and e-mails to under aged male pages. Americans send their children to Washington to be pages to learn about government with the understanding that they will be protected. The ruling party is in charge of the pages. When so-called "overly-friendly" messages appeared from Foley to an under age page it was the responsibility of Republican Rep. John Shimkus who is head of the House Page Board. Did he take up the sick Foley e-mails with the full page board? No instead he kept it secret from the board and told Hastert and his Republican cohorts Rep. Tom Reynolds and House Majority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio. These types of messages should have raised enough red flags to bring it to the full page board but instead Rep. Shimkus failed the pages and the parents that send their children to Washington under his care. He was more concerned about a Republican sexual predator than the children of which it is his job to protect. He gave Foley a slap on the wrist and Foley continued his lewd behavior. Not long after Foley donated a $100,000 to the National Republican Congressional Committee; that is outrageous if not criminal! Hastert, Shimkus and Boehner knew Foley was sending sexual suggestive electronic messages to young male pages and did nothing. Why? Because Foley bought them off for $100,000. An independent council should look into crimes that have been committed, nobody can trust Congress to look into itself, the Republican leadership is not trustworthy; they are corrupt and slime balls. Hastert, Shimkus and Boehner and their staff should testify under oath what they knew about Foley and when they knew it. Anything less can't be trusted...

The Republican Party always claims the high moral ground. Letting a sexual predator get off with a warning is beyond reason. The Republican Congress is a sleazy criminal predator Congress more concerned with their own power and fortune than the children that they are responsible to protect. Where is the moral conservatives' outrage? All those pro-family, pro-life people are very quiet. The less they say, the more they sound like hypocrites...

Hypocrisy is the bedrock of all politics. Everyone knows it, so I can only guess why you're all acting so surprised that these Republicans are behaving like politicans. The party doesn't claim the higher ground so much as it panders to it and Democrats aren't the only people who can tell the differnce. But do they really believe that by saying, "They're just as bad as we are," that they can attract more voters? I don't see the point in any of this. Foley resigned and admited himself to an alcohol rehab center. Voting Democrat will not prevent his kind from winning public office, not by any stretch of the imagination. This controversy isn't a censure on a particular political party, just on one particular man. But a lot of people have this 'blame everyone' attitude that's ruining the concept of personal accountability.

the public's attitude is largely righteous: blame the GOP leaders who allowed GOP Congressmen (Foley might not be the only one - see Kolbe, R-Arizona) to go trolling for young boys, unabated, for the last 5 or 6 years. as pointed out elsewhere, the relevant analogy is simple and apt: any high school adminstration, aware of a sexually predatory teacher conducting himself as Foley did, would certainly be derelict in thier failure to remove this individual from his position. Foley's actions have crystallized the public's perception of the GOP.

I doubt it. I haven't heard anything about Foley in the news for more than a week. Had minors actually been assaulted by congressmen we'd see a lot more coverage than we are seeing, but this story just isn't sensational enough for it to make the local news. If I thought the public was actually indicting GOP leaders I'd be singing a different tune, but all the finger pointing is being done by beltway insiders and they're the ones with the blame everyone attitude I refered to before.

not sure what you’re reading there mazer, but people are outraged and chattanooga (for example) isn’t exactly inside the beltway.

Where Is Wamp On Foley?
posted October 10, 2006

Where is Mr. Wamp, and why won't he either publicly state he supports Speaker Hastert and the GOP leadership, or state they all must go for covering, ducking and supporting Foley for re-election in 1994, rather than protecting children from Foley's improper sexual advances.

Now, we learn as far back as 2000, some of the Republican leadership were aware of this Foley situation. They put their own political interests ahead of protecting the safety of teenage pages.

Where do you stand, Mr. Wamp? Why are you so silent? And don't tell us "Washington speak" about wanting a full investigation to find out the facts.

Either you support the leadership or you don't. Which is it?

I haven't met anyone who's "outraged", but the people I associate with are intelligent enough to know the difference between email and sex and also between 18-year old "teenagers" and children.

It's funny how little "outrage" is directed at Foley, but instead is directed against a host of republican politicians; it's almost as if the situation was being used as a political weapon.

Congrats to Jack for finding a letter on the internet supposedly from a person in Chattanooga. How does he do it?

''Throw the bums out!''

War, Sex Scandal Sinking GOP in Polls
Wed Oct 11, 2006 8:52 AM ET

John Whitesides, Political Correspondent

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush and Republicans are sinking under the weight of the Iraq war and the Capitol Hill sex scandal, according to a flurry of polls, endangering their control of Congress in the November 7 elections.

Democrats hold a growing advantage heading into the final four weeks of the campaign, with analysts moving more Republican-held seats into the high-risk category and improving the odds of Democrats seizing control of at least the House of Representatives.

The polls, all taken after the sex scandal surfaced, show Democratic candidates with huge leads over Republicans amid broad public unhappiness about the Iraq war, Bush's leadership and the Republican-led Congress.

"These polls seem to suggest the public has decided to just 'throw the bums out,'" said Karlyn Bowman, a public opinion analyst at the conservative American Enterprise Institute.

"These are huge, huge, numbers and they are very bad for Republicans," she said. "There is not a shred of good news in these polls for Republicans."

yet another tidbit from the Foley saga, fun and rich in irony, from the New Republic:

Quote:
HOW ROVE TWISTED FOLEY'S ARM:
It seems increasingly clear that the GOP congressional leadership, eager for every safe incumbent in the House to run for re-election, looked the other way as evidence accumulated that Mark Foley had a thing for pages. Holding onto his seat became more important than confronting him over his extracurricular activities.

But there's more to the story of why Foley stood for re-election this year. Yesterday, a source close to Foley explained to THE NEW REPUBLIC that in early 2006 the congressman had all but decided to retire from the House and set up shop on K Street. "Mark's a friend of mine," says this source. "He told me, 'I'm thinking about getting out of it and becoming a lobbyist.'"

But when Foley's friend saw the Congressman again this spring, something had changed. To the source's surprise, Foley told him he would indeed be standing for re-election. What happened? Karl Rove intervened.

According to the source, Foley said he was being pressured by "the White House and Rove gang," who insisted that Foley run. If he didn't, Foley was told, it might impact his lobbying career.

"He said, 'The White House made it very clear I have to run,'" explains Foley's friend, adding that Foley told him that the White House promised that if Foley served for two more years it would "enhance his success" as a lobbyist. "I said, 'I thought you wanted out of this?' And he said, 'I do, but they're scared of losing the House and the thought of two years of Congressional hearings, so I have two more years of duty.'"

The White House declined a request for comment on the matter, but obviously the plan hasn't worked out quite as Rove hoped it would.

So instead of continuing his sick internet correspondences as a private citizen, Foley chose to run for reelection and eventually got caught. I get the distinct feeling that if he had stuck to his original plan that the skeletons in his closet would never have been revealed so publicly. In fact I'd go so far as to suggest that GOP leaders used their knowledge of his emails to blackmail him into running in this year's election. So yeah, their plan really backfired.
