Default China throwing a party for its new empire

From Guardian Unlimited:

The savannah comes to Beijing as China hosts its new empire

Quote:
The most lavish party that China has thrown in more than 50 years got under way last night with high-pitched Peking opera, rhythmic African drumming and a gravity-defying display of acrobatics in the Great Hall of the People.

This was a display of power as much as entertainment - the unique spectacle of a nation hosting a continent. The guest list for the opening banquet included almost every head of state in Africa, representing a quarter of the votes in the UN, a sizeable chunk of the world’s natural resources and, combined with the hosts, a third of the planet’s people.
...

Quote:
Formerly reticent about appearing on the world stage, Beijing has gone into diplomatic overdrive this year and appears to be outmanoeuvring a US administration distracted and discredited by Iraq. In June Shanghai hosted leaders of countries representing more than half the world’s population. Last month Chinese emissaries played a crucial role in forcing North Korea back to negotiations after its nuclear test.

But it has never attempted anything on the scale of the African cooperation forum. Perhaps no nation has. Wenran Jiang, a political scientist at the University of Alberta, said the event signalled a shift in the global balance of power.

“Which major power could pull something off on this scale? The UK has influence in the Commonwealth, but this is far different. We are talking about an emerging world power that has the mobilising power to gather 48 out of the 53 heads of state in Africa. I don’t see any parallel in history. The US never did this, nor did Russia. Symbolically this is a very, very big event.”
...

Quote:
But it is hard cash rather than soft soap that brings 40 heads of state, eight political leaders and hundreds of business people to Beijing for the three-day China-Africa forum. Dipping into the world’s largest foreign currency reserve of $1 trillion, China is expected to display its largesse with offers of so much aid and trade that it will soon eclipse the US and Europe as the dominant foreign economy in Africa.

Deals in oil, copper, telecommunications, transport and possibly nuclear power will be discussed around the periphery of the summit, which includes a trade fair and meetings by 1,500 business executives.

Everyone agrees the potential is huge. China’s trade with Africa has increased fivefold since 2000 to $50bn. The figure is expected to double again by 2010, by which time China will have far surpassed the US and France as the major player in the region. But this super-summit is about more than a single continent. It marks a new stage in China’s re-emergence as a superpower.

Default China and Africa proclaim new strategic partnership

M&C News:

Quote:
Beijing - China and African countries declared their aim to deepen their cooperation with a 'new type of strategic partnership' on Sunday and pledged to double their trade volume to 100 billion dollars by the year 2010. The declaration came at the end of the two-day Forum on China- Africa Cooperation in Beijing, the largest-ever summit between the two sides involving China and 48 African countries, and drafted plans for further development of their ties until 2009.
Quote:
Prior to issuing the declaration, the Chinese companies and African governments and firms had signed a total of 14 business deals worth 1.9 billion dollars. On Saturday, China pledged to double its development aid and in order to boost trade and investments in Africa, said it would set up a special fund of five billion dollars, comprised of three billion dollars in low-interest credits and two billion dollars' worth of export credits over the next three years.

China, which has seen a 30 per cent rise in trade with Africa annually since 2000 and this year it is expected to exceed 50 billion dollars, has been criticized for co-operating with repressive regimes in Africa. In addition, China said it would consider further debt forgiveness for poor African countries. To date, China has already written off some 10.9 billion yuan (1.3 billion dollars) iof debts. By 2009, five trade and economic zones are to be established in Africa, while at the same time, China is to provide training to 15,000 Africans, send agricultural experts to Africa and set up 10 agro-technology centres in Africa.

The number of scholarships for African students to study in China will be doubled to 4,000 per year by the year 2009, while China also pledged to build 100 schools and 30 hospitals in Africa. It also said it would provide 300 million yuan for the fight against malaria.
China seems to be playing its cards wisely. They have the money and the know-how to boost the industrial development in Africa and to get a good hold of its natural resources in the process. And those resources in turn will help China a lot on its route to become the leading superpower on the planet.

I hope that they get there soon.

I'm tired of hearing about the USA screwing over everyone. It will be fun to blame MY problems on somebody else.

I wonder how China is on enviro stuff? Hey, think they take care of their own people?

Of course they do :danciig demos:

Hahahahahahahahahaa
