Default Who's Who...?

I keep hearing George W. Bush call Senator John Kerry a liberal and refer to himself as conservative. Both candidates are rather liberal with their use of the words liberal and conservative. Listening to Bush and Kerry it is easy to forget what the words actually mean. In the true sense of the words neither is a liberal nor a conservative candidate. What they are, are political spin masters...

A conservative is one who favors traditional views and values, tending to oppose change. Bush calls himself a conservative however his preemptive strike doctrine goes against traditional views. Bush's policy of nation building in Iraq goes against political conservative views as does his major expansion of Medicare, not to mention his massive spending across the board that is increasing the huge budget deficit. George W. Bush seems pretty liberal to me. How does he square being conservative with his liberal record? He is a liberal spender, spending money to build Iraq and just as liberal spending American lives to defend Iraq. He has liberally increased the federal government's size. They use to talk about Democrats as tax and spend liberals, that was before Bill Clinton brought some fiscal discipline to the party, something that Senator Kerry supported. I think Democrats would be wise to call Bush and the Republican Congress 'CHARGE AND SPEND REPUBLICANS' for their complete lack of fiscal responsibility and willingness to fork out the pork at every chance. Republicans spend money like teenagers with their dad's credit card, knowing they will be long gone from political office when the bill comes in the mail...

A liberal is one who favors reform, open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; basically a liberal is a nice person. So why does Senator Kerry want to drop the liberal label? Because tough guys win wartime elections not nice guys. Kerry may be a liberal, his answer to abortion is that his belief is personal and that even though he may not believe in abortion he is tolerant to those people that do. It is basically the same answer for gay marriage and in foreign policy, for his views of other nations; he is he is tolerant of people that have a differing of opinion with him whether Europeans, abortion, gay marriage or whatever and Bush says he's inconsistent. The one place that the liberal tag doesn't fit Kerry is balancing the budget; when it comes to the deficit, Kerry is more conservative than Bush. How can fiscal conservatives sleep at night knowing that the biggest spending president in the last couple of decades, George W. Bush claims to be a conservative? My guess is conservatives will secretly vote for Kerry. They will do that for two reasons, to stop the big spending Bush from spending even more and to keep fiscal conservatives from becoming irrelevant in the Republican Party. If Bush can win with the religious right, the Republican Party doesn't need the fiscal conservatives anymore than they need a balanced budget...

So who is the liberal candidate and who is the conservative candidate? Both Bush and Kerry, Bush is more liberal and when it comes to the budget, Kerry is more conservative. They are quite the flip floppers...
