Default Mash-Ups Moving Out Of The Underground

By NEIL STRAUSS, NYT

The song may sound familiar at first, thanks to the unmistakable guitar riff from Nirvana's classic "Smells Like Teen Spirit."
But, suddenly, the recording changes course when, instead of the gravelly voice of Kurt Cobain, the smooth R&B harmonies of a Destiny's Child hit appear on top of the grunge music. As the recording moves on, it is clear that the song is neither fish nor fowl; it is a crossbreed that neither band ever intended, or even dreamed of.
It is something that is completely different, often illegal and, thanks to the Internet, becoming explosively popular.
Songs like this one, which combine different hits without adding any original music, may represent the first significant new musical genre to be lifted out of the underground, developed and then spread, mostly via the Web. The songs, called mash-ups or bootlegs, typically match the rhythm, melody and underlying spirit of the instrumentals of one song with the a cappella vocals of another. And the more odd the pairing the better.

bootlegs have been fairly thick on the ground this side of the pond since the mid 90s ...
my favs are..

Fatboy Slim vs Eminem - Fatshady
Josh Wink vs Public Enemy - Higher State of Bring the Noise
Freelance Hellraiser - A stroke of genius ...

great bootlegs also available from our own LV15 - Aphrodite vs TLC: badscrubs and JackUzi - Mobb Deep vs some funk band: cant remember what that was called ...

Its relatively easy to make a decent bootleg with ACID pro, and the results are usually very fun

I’ve been a little down because today my doctor diagnosed me with John Travolta Syndrome. It’s a condition where your face or head grows laterally, getting wider year by year. It’s not so much of a problem and it’s nothing to be ashamed of, it’s just a condition. In fact mine is good because it means my brain is getting bigger too. But not that Travolta guy, his head is mostly fat. The doctors said I am much smarter than John Travolta and I believe them.

i have a CD titled Limp Bizkit - New Old Songs and it is entirley made up of remixes of limp bizkit songs. i never bothered to check and see if it was an "official" release or a bootleg but i have to say i like it better than any of my bizkit discs.

i think remixes are a show of respect, it is when someone tries to conceal the fact that it is not original music that it becomes wrong.
