Default Fasttrack Movies – Down, Not Out

You may have noticed that the file sharing help and information site FasttrackMovies.com has been inaccessible for several days. I’ve been informed by a site Administrator that arrangements have been made to get the site back up and running very soon. Perhaps as early as today.

Jack.

Fasttrackmovies.com Tanks

Thomas Mennecke

In the continuing war between the music/movie industries and the file-sharing community, a type of technological arms race has developed. Once a certain type of technology is developed, the RIAA or MPAA is quick to undermine this establishment. In contrast, once a particular technology is defeated, the P2P world is quick with a countermeasure.

For example, most remember Napster as a centralized P2P network. The RIAA was quick to expose this weakness, as continuous and pricey litigation dried up this young Silicon Valley company.

While this weakened the file-sharing community temporarily, a response wasn't too far off. Even during Napster’s remaining months, efforts were already in motion to eliminate the great vulnerability of centralization.

Gnutella and FastTrack were already in limited release, and catching on quickly. Both these networks eliminated the idea of maintaining centralized servers. This would prove to be the standard of all future P2P applications.

Another major portion of the file-sharing war centers on "spoofing" or flooding communities with bogus files. This has created some cause for concern, however file-trader's greatest fears never materialized.

There are several reasons why such fears never came about. Above all, file verification, or hashing, has become P2P's greatest friend. The ability to verify files accuracy prior to downloading has created an enormous P2P subculture. This movement dedicates itself to providing accurate hash codes for a wide variety of files. While this has become most popular on the eDonkey2000 network, it usefulness has also spilled over to FastTrack.

While FastTrack can be a very resourceful network, it has been known to contain less then accurate file names. FastTrackMovies.com virtually eliminated the mistake of downloading erroneous files, propping this site to great popularity.

However, it seems its popularity has suffered a great reversal, as the site is no longer available. We've been able to research this situation to some extent, however the only information available seems to indicate the site has suffered a DoS attack. It is not currently known when, or if, this site will be back up.

While this is a minor setback, there are plenty of other resources to verify file accuracy. In particular,verifieds.com provides the same service as FastTrackMovies.com, perhaps to an even greater extent. Check out our forum link below for the latest information regarding this issue.
