thanks for the help, guys

here's a question: you find an nzb file, you go to grab it, and the NL log says "403- no such article". can you pretty much assume that it's no longer hosted on a newsgroup and it's probably never coming back?n i mean, any point in keeping it queued?

if you're using your isp's news server, article retention rate is probably only about 3 weeks. you might want to consider shelling out & signing up with a premium news server where the retention is at least 3 months.

Didn't you recently switch to DSL knifey? Around here, DSL doesn't have any news servers at all. That might be why you are getting the error. Or were you getting stuff via usenet before trying this version of newsleecher?

If anyone wants suggestions, this is the cheapest and good for the price---> speed limited for $4.95/month http://www.megabitz.net/ They seem to have a 2 day free trial and a cheap 1st month for their faster unlimited service too

This is really popular too http://www.newshosting.com/

And this http://www.usenetserver.com/

I don't know if you can get a trial for UNS, I think you have to ask Newshosting.

you'd think a private news service would be a little safer than d/ling content from isp's news server, no? for that matter, wonder why my isp (Bellsouth) even hosts all this content at all (or are they merely linking to UseNet? i'm not clear on the architecture...)?

your isp hosts the content to allow it's subscribers access. how good Bellsouth is i don't know.....Roadrunner is tolerable thanks to QuickPar.

stop being so paranoid about safety ffs. they'll be going after Bittorrent long before Usenet.

i used Usenetserver for over a year.....they have issues at times but i was too lazy to switch. they've been much better recently, increasing their retention and providing Encrypted UseNet Access if that'll make you feel better.

you ought to check it out for a month....you'll never give it up.

there is ample content available via Bellsouth's newsgroup servers - that's what got me wondering...and just cos i'm paranoid doesn't mean there aren't legions of Big Media's legal goon squads out to get people like me

but UseNet speeds and the utility of progs like NewsLeecher make paying a few bucks per month pretty attractive - particularly if they offer additional anonymity.

Your isp can theoretically keep track of everything you do, so if their servers are enough for you, you don't need a pay server for anonymity. All that is predicated on you NOT threatening the President btw.

you mean, even if i am not using my isp's news server, they can still track my d/ls, since the packets are coming thru them?

Yes, everything comes through them and they can figure it all out if they want to. This is typical of the new enemy http://www.p-cube.com/Flash/Demo_09/p-cube_flash.html

I registered just to say how much this thread kicks ass. I haven’t updated since version 2.5 (which I paid for) because my subscription expired and they apparently don't deactivate the software unless you upgrade, which is cool, but I think I'm going to cough up the $30 bucks just for this feature.

Only for 001 type files. Are you sure your settings are ok, like checking off "auto unpause queued set files if needed". That'd be easy to forget about.

well, it wasn't checked but it didn't help. i can drag my par 2 file into the extract window and it will do the rest but it used to be completely automatic. hmmm, will have to research further. thatnks, nap
