Network at job? - P2P-Zone

My job is getting a network put into the 5 office PCs. They sent out memos saying that use of the network for other than business can get u fired. My question is what is a network? duh Do all the pcs share the same files so I have to beware what I do on the pc? Or should I just stay away from the network?

It depends. What is the network for? I wouldn't use P2P at your job. Unless you don't care if your fired.

If your business is closely monitoring activity from its users and are threatening disciplinary action for personal use of company computers on their network, then you are better off just using work pc for work-only related use including web browsing. Use of P2P apps would not be a good idea.

There's no need to nit pick and split hairs. You're not allowed to use company resources for non-businesss stuff. Period. Arguing the network begins at the interface or the switch or the router or the wall-jack will probably not be look on very favourably. This policy usually does not allow p2ps; hard to justify business use. If you need to clarify things like having mp3s on your machine I'm sure there is someone that can do that for you. Though usually, as long as you aren't firewalled too badly, a moderate amount of file sharing will go unnoticed, depending on the workplace.

I deleted all the songs I had on my pc just in case. So when they come to install stuff they don't see that I've been dl stuff. I wanted to teach the kids how to use p2ps but my boss had said no.

you can use audiogalaxy thru the web on your work PC to d/l files to your home PC. I wonder if that would be nice 'n' safe?

aww, geez bronxie. Stop deleting your mp3s, and go google "what is a network?" or if your on windows xp, do a search in help and support and watch the little movie that explains networking.

A network can be in many shapes and forms. Basically it is the linking of computers so they can easily share information and services.

It doesnt mean it will be a snoop fest to all of your personal doccuments, or the spying on of your external email (internal maybe)

Most companies dont care whats on your pc personally. Unless of course its porn or something. Having a p2p app wouldn't be good either, but having some mp3s floating around to listen to is fine, as long as your not sending em out across the network.

Staying away from the network as you mentioned also might be kinda hard, in case you need a file or set of doccuments on your company intranet.

As for teaching the kids about p2p, thats good. Its too bad the boss said no. If kids grow up with a lack of RIAA dependence, then the music scene as a whole will be opened for freedom.

You should teach the kids about spyware. Maybe some of them have programs like kazaa at home or other junk, showing them how to be comfortable removing diffrent forms of spyware and junk like bonzai buddy, would benifical.

The last best thing you can als do, is tell em linux is available for the ps2. Sugar coat it a bit, they may think its some game and start begging mommy or daddy for the latest ps2 addon "ps2 linux kit" Nothing like weaning them on to alternative operating systems at an early age.

The PC, the network, the servers are all owned by the company. They are legally responsible for what is on them, be it pirated music or software.

If it's not work related - don't put it on the computer.

If you want to listen to MP3s at work - burn them to a CD at home and use them that way.
