What’s New?

allmusic has undergone a complete makeover. The new allmusic has added content, improved functionality and a compelling new look. Feedback from our users was a direct inspiration for much of the new site. The result is a robust music discovery and reference site.

We invite you to spend some time exploring the new allmusic. The site contains an enormous amount of information with new functionality and formats. It will take you a bit of time to get oriented and to get the hang of how the site works. In addition to the “What’s New?” section, check out the Site Glossary which explains many of the unique AMG terms and formats. Once you’ve test driven the site, please share your thoughts with us. We want to hear from you.

Some of what you’ll discover includes:

Addition of Classical Content (formerly allclassical.com) to allmusic: AMG's extensive classical content has been a well kept secret for too long. The new allmusic brings our pop music and classical music content together into a single site so that you'll truly be able to explore allmusic. However, you will notice differences in the format and content of pop and classical pages. We've done this intentionally to preserve the usability, features, and terms that are essential to each, and we've tried to keep the design as intuitive as possible. The effort has been a challenge, and it remains a work-in-progress, but we think it's well worth the effort and the inevitable bumps along the way.

Registration: The new allmusic remains totally free to our users. However, registration will be required for access to portions of the site that have been designated as Premium Content.

Premium Content includes:
Music Samples
Advanced Search
Expanded Artist Info (Credits, Songs, and Charts & Awards tabs)
Expanded Album Info (Credits and Charts & Awards tabs)
New Editorial Features
explore by…. Genre/Style, Country, Instrument, Mood, or Theme
Collections (Coming Soon!)

Advanced Search: An expanded search function that powers additional and more refined searching of the allmusic archive. Improvements include expanded search terms (i.e. birth date, birth place, and Billboard chart) and the ability to search using multiple search terms (i.e. search for indie rock albums with an AMG Rating of 4 and 5 stars). This feature requires registration.

New Editorial Features:
explore by… This feature is a real musical playground. Pick your entry point – Genre, Country, Instrument, Mood, or Theme. Then let AMG guide your through a musical exploration of the chosen topic. This feature requires registration.
Collections (Coming Soon!): A guide to the best albums and songs in every category you can imagine and a few you can’t. This feature requires registration.
Expanded New Releases: Improved navigation including sorting by all fields, expanded data, and expanded advance notice of future releases.
Editors’ Choice – AMG helps you navigate the volumes of new releases by pointing you to our picks for the best releases from the past three months.

Music Samples: Samples of 30 seconds duration are now available throughout the site, whenever the speaker icon appears. To hear the sample, just click on the speaker icon. All samples are Windows Media Audio (WMA) and require the Windows Media Player. If you don’t currently have the Windows Media Player, click here for a free download. This feature requires Registration.

Sortable Search Results: All search results and many other lists (i.e. Songs, Credits, Charts & Awards) are now sortable. A sortable list is indicated by an or arrow appearing in one of the field headers. An arrow appearing in the field header indicates that the list is sorted by that field. An up arrow () indicates that it is sorted in ascending order. A down arrow () indicates it is sorted in descending order. Clicking on a field header will sort the list according to that field. To change the order, click again on the header.

Expanded Artist Information: We now provide an artist’s complete recorded song list and also a complete list of songs composed by the artist but recorded by someone else. Additionally, we now present the artist’s complete credits for all their recorded works. (The term “complete” in this usage refers to all data within the AMG archives. While we pride ourselves on being the most comprehensive recorded music reference available, we do not claim to have every recording ever released.)

Send to a Friend: Clicking on the “Send to a Friend” icon brings up your email client with the page link pasted into the message body and the page name in the subject line; all ready for sending off to your chosen recipient. You’ll find the “Send to a Friend” icon in the right hand corner of the section’s title header on artist, album, “explore by…” and New Releases pages.

Expandable Row: Some data lists offer an expandable row, which, when moused-over, expands to provide more information about the highlighted item without having to click-through. For instance, in a discography list, the expandable row will show the album cover and AMG Track Picks, if available. Expandable Rows are provided on most album lists (i.e. Discography, Album Search Results) and song/track lists where the composer names are too numerous to fit into the column.

Picture Browser: We have multiple photos for many artists. You can now browse through the selection using the Picture Browser which appears on the Artist sidebar underneath the photo. Just click on “Next” or “Previous” to scroll through the pictures. You’ll also notice that the photos rotate as you click through the various tabs on the Artist page.

Album Browser: The Album Browser, which appears on the Album sidebar underneath the album cover, allows you to browse through an artist’s discography without going back to the discography tab. Just click on “Next” or “Previous” to bring up the next album in the discography

Open a New Window with Shift+Click: We’ve heard from many of you who were frustrated that our links didn’t allow you to use the "Shift+Click on a link" keyboard combination to open a new window of the linked page. Well, we listened and we reprogrammed our links so that this is now possible. Additionally, the Ctrl+N keyboard combination will continue to work to open a new window with the exact same page.

Book Links: In addition to posters (Allposters.com) and sheet music (Musicnotes.com), we now have links to Barnes & Noble for books pertaining to the selected artist. You can find all of these links on the artist and album sidebars under the “Products” header.

i was quite bummed when i stumbled across the "improved" site yesterday. as in many things internet, upgrades usually do more for owners than users. it's bloated, slow, difficult to navigate and heading toward $ubscription. enjoy it while it lasts.

js.
