Image-handling flaws put Windows PCs at risk

Three security flaws in the way Windows handles certain graphics files could create an opening for spyware and Trojan horse attacks, Microsoft has warned.

The vulnerabilities relate to how the operating system renders the Windows Metafile (WMF) and Enhanced Metafile (EMF) image formats, Microsoft said Tuesday in its MS05-053 security bulletin. Two of them could allow a remote intruder to gain complete control over a Windows PC, Microsoft warned in the bulletin, the sole one in its monthly patch cycle.

Microsoft has tagged the security bulletin "critical," its most serious rating. The software maker urges Windows users to install the security

FBI agents bust 'Botmaster'

A 20-year-old man accused of using thousands of hijacked computers, or "bot nets," to damage systems and send massive amounts of spam across the Internet was arrested on Thursday in what authorities called the first such prosecution of its kind.

Jeanson James Ancheta, who prosecutors say was a well-known member of the "Botmaster Underground" -- or the secret network of computer hackers skilled at bot attacks -- was taken into custody after being lured to FBI offices in Los Angeles, said U.S. Attorney's spokesman Thom Mrozek.

Palm chief denies Palm OS pull-back
Palm CEO Ed Colligan has pledged his company's whole-hearted support for the Palm OS - in particular when it comes to its Treo family of smart phones.

Colligan promised a "rich product roadmap" of Palm OS-based Treos - and PDAs and Mobile Managers.

"Our Palm OS customer loyalty is extremely high, and we intend to continue to earn that loyalty with great Palm OS-based products," wrote Colligan in an open letter to developers of Palm OS-based apps.

"We have sold more than 30 million Palm OS-based products over the years, and it is not our intent to walk away from such a strong and loyal user base. That's why in May we extended our license for Palm OS, giving us the right to continue to make and market Palm OS-based products until 2010

Movie downloading? You'll have to wait

Movie downloading in Europe is set to grow but not as quickly some would like

Screen Digest believes that the market for movie downloads will be worth £60m in the UK and €250m in Europe as a whole by 2010. This is considerably smaller than the market for music downloads, which are forecast to reach €900m by 2010.

A recent article by Rethink Research's Faultline has suggested that the market for movie downloads would follow an almost identical pattern to that of music and reach $1.2bn by 2010.
