WiMax: Wireless pie in sky or the next tech revolution?

SAN FRANCISCO – On a stormy day at an Argentine agricultural school, Maria del Carmen Villar stood in front of a camera that streamed her image over the Internet to a conference here – more than 6,500 miles away.
Such an event is hardly unusual in this era of broadband and webcams, but it was a milestone for the Instituto Agropecuario de Monte, a rural school that until recently had only slow dial-up connections that were bogged down by text, let alone video.

Earth’s core rotating faster than the crust
The Earth’s inner core is rotating faster than the outer mantle and crust, according to a new study of earthquake data. The difference is slight but means that the solid inner core makes an extra revolution every 900 years or so, hidden within the molten outer core.

Xiaodong Song, a seismologist at Columbia University in New York, US, studied records of 18 earthquake pairs. The pair members originated at exactly the same location but were separated by anything from a few days to 34 years.

How Do You Catch Your Tunes?
It's Tuesday. Album release day. A day that has historically brought much hullabaloo to many a record store. But as rain taps on the windows of Olsson's Books and Records in Bethesda -- it is, indeed, a beautiful day to nose around for an album -- there is not even a whisper in the CD aisles.

"Nobody even knows that Tuesday is album release day anymore," said Lucas Hayes, a music manager at the store, standing next to a promotional billboard for Ry Cooder's new album. "Sometimes I have to explain that to people."

Officials in Turkey and Morocco have arrested two men thought to be responsible for creating computer worms that infected hundreds of thousands of computers worldwide this year, including the Zotob worm that crippled several high-profile companies this month, the FBI said yesterday.

Police in Morocco arrested Farid Essebar, 18, a Moroccan national born in Russia who used the online moniker "Diabl0." Authorities in Turkey arrested 21-year-old Atilla Ekici, known by the online alias "Coder."

Web, DVDs Could Mark CDs' Slow Death
When Ohio-based rock band the Sun releases its first full-length album next month, it will be available on DVD, online and on vinyl record. But not on the medium that's still the biggest seller in the music industry today: the compact disc.

"It's a tip of the hat to the past and the tip of the hat to the future," said Perry Watts-Russell, a senior vice president at Warner Bros. Records Inc., which signed the band. The label expects the Sun to be the first of many artists to embrace a no-CD, video-only strategy.

Flaw may hide malicious software
These keys are stored in the Windows Registry, a core part of the operating system that stores PC settings. Some antivirus and anti-spyware products scan the registry for malicious programs, but this new weakness allows hackers to hide the presence of their applications, according to security vendor StillSecure.

"It can be used to hide malicious programs on a system that would go undetected by security software or registry scanning tools," said Mitchell Ashley,

Royalty fight clouds music subscriptions
Digital-music companies and music publishers have reached an impasse in royalty negotiations, clouding the future of online subscription services such as those from Yahoo, RealNetworks and Napster.

The two sides have been negotiating on and off for years over the amount of money that songwriters and music publishers should get from these subscription plans, which allow listeners to download or stream an unlimited amount of music per month.

New Web copyright tool to exclude non-IE users
Only users of Internet Explorer and a version of Netscape will be able to access a copyright preregistration system slated for launch in late October.

"Other browsers may work well with the version we are using now, but they have not been tested," Julia Huff, the U.S. Copyright Office's chief operating officer, said in an e-mail to CNET News.com. "Because of our tight schedule and resources, we cannot do that testing now."

Huff said Friday that the office must go ahead with the new electronic system by Oct. 24 because of a mandate in the Family Entertainment and Copyright Act, which Congress passed in April. The office just weeks ago suggested the possibility of browser limitations and began collecting public comments.

Default AMD Challenges Intel to a Dual-Core Duel.

The Challenge

AMD proposes a live dual-core duel in 2005 - a public performance evaluation between server platforms based on the highest-performing Dual-Core AMD Opteron™ 800 Series or 200 Series processors and the corresponding Intel x86 server processors that are commercially available in volume.

AMD is proud to offer a true dual-core computing solution for x86 servers and workstations - the Dual-Core AMD Opteron™ processor.

Visit this web site regularly over the coming months for additional details on the duel, including an online petition to be launched in early September, where visitors will have the opportunity to voice their support for the dual-core duel.
