You’ll get a fierce argument from the Spanish people about that. They’ll continue fighting terrorism, but they’ll be damned if they’ll put up with their own politicians lying to them. If anything it was the misinformation campaign on two continents that can be blamed for this. Western leaders lying to their people about the war in Iraq has now played right into the hands of Al-Queda, and that’s something a lot of people are going to have to answer for.

Zapatero raps Bush and Blair: "You can't wage a war with lies"

The 90% of Spaniards who were opposed to the invasion of Iraq have finally found an official voice. Europeans who thought they were increasingly surrounded by mendacious politicans have also been offered a breath of fresh air. The invasion of Iraq in many developed countries put official lies at the top of the agenda. In fact lies were no longer being used to justify official policy as has always been customary in advanced western democracies but the lies themselves had become the policy.

The Zapatero victory has sparked a sense of euphoria in some quarters of Europe merely because he represents a government that is neither scheming nor underhand not thinking twice about insulting the intelligence of the electorate or making political capital out of victims of terrorism.

José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero is after all a professional politician and will no doubt make compromises that will diminish him in the eyes of his electors but for the moment a man who has the courage to say what is merely common sense flying in the face of US interests and the "international community" which is much the same thing is offered what is practically a heroic status. It is all the sadder that merely taking the side of the patently logical one becomes a revolutionary hero fighting off the forces of mendacity and mammon.

Zapatero yesterday gave both Messrs Bush and Blair a mild brushing down saying that the Iraq invasion was "a political error and that Bush and Blair must do some self-criticism as you can't just go bombing people on the off chance". He continued saying that "you can't organise a war with lies".

Zapatero has reiterated that he intends to withdraw the 1,300 Spanish troops currently stationed in Iraq if there is still no UN mandate on 30 June of this year. This has led some to say that the terrorists have successfully hijacked the Spanish elections and have been successful in their aim on undermining the occupation forces of Iraq. The counter claim is that the will of the Spanish electorate was itself highjacked by Aznar and Zapatero had already stated that he intended to withdraw Spanish troops by June 30. The Madrid bombings do not magically make the Iraq invasion any less illegal or ill-advised. If you are a victim of terrorism this does not automatically make you a supine ally of the US/British coalition.

Zapatero has stated that his priorities are still: fighting terrorism, a better working relationship with Europe and Spain's Mediterranean neighbours and a commitment to getting the EU train back on the tracks particularly with the reaching of an agreement about the European Constitution. from

France is next on the Al-Queda political coup tour of europe
PARIS (Reuters) - France has received threats of a possible attack against French interests from an Islamist group, the Justice Ministry said in a statement Tuesday.

The ministry said it had received a warning which spoke of possible attacks within France and against French interests abroad from a group called "Servants of Allah the Powerful and Wise."

"These are threats articulated in such a way that they are being taken very seriously," a judicial source told Reuters.

The ministry statement said the Paris prosecutor's office had immediately launched an inquiry.

"It is obviously not yet possible to comment on the value of this document," the statement concluded.

Security experts say France is a target because of its cooperation with authorities fighting Islamic militants in its former North African colonies Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco.

an islamofascist is an islamofascist, the name of the group is irrelevant, France will capitulate, maybe not as spectacularly bad as Spain but surrendering is in their blood, it's only a matter of time before they meet this groups demands.

The United States believes Abu Hafs al-Masri — the organization that said it carried out the Madrid bombings — sometimes falsely claims to be acting on behalf of Al Qaeda. The group has taken responsibility for terror attacks worldwide, including the deadly Aug. 19 bombing of U.N. headquarters in Baghdad and even claimed the blackouts in the United States and London last year.

Spain's government is studying the group's claim to the Madrid bombings and is also looking into whether the Basque separatist ETA group was responsible despite its denials.

Authorities are trying to identify a purported Al Qaeda operative in a videotape found after a telephone tip to a Madrid TV station. It allegedly contained a responsibility claim from "the military spokesman for Al Qaeda in Europe, Abu Dujan al Afghani." Who he really is — or if he exists — remains a mystery.

Saad al-Faqih, a Saudi dissident and head of the Islamic Reform Movement (search), said Al Qaeda had to change after Sept. 11. Since then, Washington has pursued Al Qaeda on its turf — in the villages, mountains and caves of Afghanistan — and cut its financing by pushing for global vigilance over money transactions and freezing of assets of suspected backers.

"There is no organization as such that you can call Al Qaeda now, but rather followers who believe in the ideas of bin Laden and can organize themselves in small cells and carry out attacks," al-Faqih said.

Purported Al Qaeda Letter Calls Truce in Spain

CAIRO (Reuters) - A group claiming to have links with al Qaeda said Wednesday it was calling a truce in its Spanish operations to see if the new government would withdraw its troops from Iraq, a pan-Arab newspaper said.

In a statement sent Wednesday to the Arabic language daily al-Hayat, the Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigades, which claimed responsibility for the Madrid bombings that killed 201 people, also urged its European units to stop all operations.

"Because of this decision, the leadership has decided to stop all operations within the Spanish territories... until we know the intentions of the new government that has promised to withdraw Spanish troops from Iraq," the statement said.

"And we repeat this to all the brigades present in European lands: Stop all operations."

In a shock election result just days after the Madrid attacks, Spain elected the Socialist party, which has since said it will probably withdraw its troops from Iraq.

The Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigades have previously claimed responsibility for bombings in Turkey and Iraq.

"The Spanish people... chose peace by choosing the party that was against the alliance with America," the statement said. The newspaper planned to publish it Thursday.
