Default IRC and newsgroups still beat P2P's ass

They still get stuff first but I've noticed the gap closing quickly. eDonkey and Direct Connect are getting some things only a few days after IRC.

Default It all filters through...

Presumably, if an IRC user is also on EDonkey, then the new stuff should filter through after a couple of days,

Also, we know of EDonkey users that are also KazaaLite users and so it should filter through to there in about a week...

The bigest headache on P2P is the people who CLAIM to have something they do not. For example do a search on FastTrack for "Attack Clones"... Where do these people get off with pulling stunts like this?

well, I can say at least 1 person on winmx is sharing the real 2 vcd ready mpg version of episode 2 attack of the clones.....me, but yes of course I got it off a newsgroup.

But the gap is closing very rapidly.

this was an extremely interesting article...thank-you Napho for sharing it.

I've always found these newsgroups and IRC (especially IRC) to be very confusing....can anyone here write a tutorial that explains how these work....how do any of you personal use them?

how do i get on them sucessfully and get what i want (namely movies and software)

And does anyone know if these irc groups are friendly for dial-up users or this something mostly reserved for broadband users like the "donkey" and "direct connect"

I am looking for tips here on sucessfully finding and getting files off of both the newsgroups and irc...can anyone please explain this to me (dummy version preferably)

thanks,

-harbynger

One feature hybrid p2p clients aim for is creating a completely transparent method for the user to access IRC fserves and newsgroups. It's something I'm planning to do myself, basically behind the scenes the client will log on to one or more irc servers, and enter mp3/movie trading channels and compile a list of the available files, probably by logging onto the fserves and finding out wat each of them contain. To the user all they have to do is enter their search term, and along with FastTrak, Opennap, Gnutella, WinMX, eDonkey networks the client also uses results from IRC.

Also, while we're on the topic, does anyone know a way to access the requisite (alt.binaries.* ?) newsgroups without having to pay for a proper service?

Aye, I've had problems with free news servers in the past, trying to find one which has the right newsgroups which doesn't disappear after a couple of weeks for example

Believe it or not, I would too.

Getting free access to alt.binaries was the ONLY real benefit of internet access the webtv way

the problem with programs that access irc seems to be that they don't take into account the limited serving bandwidth going on. irc channels are already overloaded; introducing clients with leechers would make it much worse.

If I was to implement it, I would only do so if it was possible to allow "uploads" by running a fserve transparent to the user containing their shared files.

test. news.rcn.ne is a free one that's been working forever. But it's slow.
