I'm now completely convinced: the GOP is playing for the lose with candidates who can take the hit because they'll never be in national politics again.
If the GOP had put a good candidate in as Pres, and a good candidate in as his VP, and they had lost then they would have been damaged goods in 2012. McCain and Whatshername are throw-away candidates for a year the GOP was expecting to lose anyways. Imagine if McCain won and dropped dead: clueless soccer-mom President! lol  Š
