morpheus 2.0 is no longer open-source and it is, surprisingly, not a complete rip-off.

the core that it uses, jtella, is just that - a core. there is no interface associated with it, and it was intended to be a gnutella programming interface licensed under the lgpl (lesser gnu public license), which allows linking with non-open programs.

musiccity took this code and built their own java client around it, despite some people pointing out similarities to furthurnet and limewire. morpheus looks very different to both of these, the only real similarities being that all three have standard p2p client features and all three are written in java.

morpheus 2.0 is still an awful client (with the bundled wurldmedia buyersport and the cintoa drm wrapper integrated), but it is not a clone. if the client was cleaned, then some features could be useful to users who are new to the gnutella network.

the decision to go with java was odd, but has a neat side effect - many of the people with windows xp installations that microsoft crippled to remove java from ie will now have to download sun's java vm to run morpheus 2.0, which will also restore decent java support in their browser.

xolox still beats morpheus 2.0 hands down, but it's not nice to write it off as entirely useless and call musiccity a bunch of frauds like some people have been.

one thing bugs me though; whatever happened to that rebol morpheus 2.0? it sounded interesting...
