I blew an electric circuit breaker yesterday that took down all my computers. I was offline for a while.

When I restarted, I was unable to (automatically) connect.

I manually entered JaclSpratts IP address to connect to, and it then connected.

wanted: clean port

been thinking about changing the zer0share port. now might be a good time but i don't want to inadvertantly pick a bad one. for instance different isp's now routinely block certain ones and it'd be counterproductive if we used one of those. it would have to be low traffic port and one unblocked anywhere in the world. any suggestions?

i am just not connecting to anyone on this mesh now...

i think it is a worthwhile experiment..and have enjoyed meeting alot of the ppl that have tried it and will try connecting back to it again from time to time.
tbh, at the moment i dont think anyone is connecting to it..

You can change your port any time you want Jack, just make sure to tell us about it. In fact it might be best if we all randomly selected different port numbers, prefferably 6 digit numbers. These are listen ports after all, they don't have to be the same for everybody, and they're only necessary for non-firewalled peers with listening turned on.

i know.

yet it's running & people are on so i'm not sure why you're having problems. dreamcatcher told me this morning he couldn't connect for a while. he thought it was down (i got him on), and there have been many others who wanted to connect - or reconnect - but couldn't.

i've been asked about the project by some media sites and if i talk to them we can soon expect increased interest/activity. that's why i feel now's a good time to pick a new port. i like your idea mazer but it may complicate life for newbies who already have a hard enough time hooking up (that's why i chose default initially). but multi and others have told me 1337 makes things complicated in other ways so i'm considering the switch.

if there's a good "universal" port i'll use it otherwise i'll just pick something easy to remember like 5000 or something.

Hmmm... maybe just 5 digit numbers, as the technically available port range is 0..65535.

Here is the list of officially (by IANA) assigned port numbers. There is no guarantee of any particular port being totally 'free' but if you pick from the list an 'unassigned' 5-digit port (e.g. one from between 11112-11200), it should work well for WASTE on most computers.

So I have a bunch of IPs plugged in, and I don't seem to get many connections (0 sometimes) So what server and port is static that people should be attempting to connect to? If you have DHCP please be explicit.

The trick to making the first connection to the mesh is finding an active user that has your public key installed, and you must have the public key of that user.

When any user of the mesh adds a new public key, it's supposed to make it's rounds and automatically be added in the key list of all other users. For some reason, this does not always happen correctly.

For example, I did not have the keys for IceG, Keekle, or senorbojangles. I have added these keys.

zeroshare.drakonix.org is (most of the time) on 24/7. If you can't get on, something is wrong (my server crashed) or I don't have your key installed.

i believe you only recieve a broadcast key when you are on the network with the user broadcasting the the key ..you dont get their key from others that may happen to have it...
at first i thought we updated keys from each other...any keys we didnt have we would get regardless if that person was on the network or not, if one person online had it...
sorry.. if i ever said anything that added confusion about this

pretty sure now they must be on the mesh currently with you for you to get their key..

ok, dreamcatcher is back in which reminds me: when entering an ip number to connect to don't forget to put the new port number on the end of it, as in xxx.xx.xxx.xxx:11150
