From my experience, Winmx is the best for apps, although as everyone knows, the queues can be eternal. One solution for this is to offer to trade with people--many in the file-sharing community frown upon it, but as leeching proliferates and queues grow longer, it starts to make more sense.
Soulseek is the program I use extensively now, and I have seen quite a bit of software as well.
I'll be interested in reading the opinions of others.

i've always found kazaa to be the best for downloading software, as long as you scan everything you download with an antivirus (although this probably goes for any software you get from a p2p).

I've been getting great results with Kazaa Lite. I'm convinced everything is out there on fasttrack, but some effort has to go into the search phrases.

I recently discovered that using underscore to search for an exact phrase works really well. EG, one of my favorite bands - No use for a name - returned just a few results. Searching No_use_for_a_name gets heaps of results, and of course adding the song title refines it further. Maybe i'm the last person in the filesharing world to discover this, but it's amazing how much difference it has made.

I found what I needed (and more) with Kazaa Lite.

Mind you, while using it I suddenly couldn't connect to the web; and my system usage stats shrank to 30%, and I had a weird crash when I tried to reboot later... but um... it's got the goods so there I am.
