Code Red II - double dose of damage

Just as we were breathing a sigh of relief after surviving the seconding round of the original Code Red attacks, a new strain of the virus appeared. Code Red II attacks harder and carries a nasty payload. Instead of just defacing Web sites, it opens a 'back door' for hackers.

PDF files may carry 'Peachy' virus

Adobe's popular PDF file format--known to anyone who's ever called up a tax form on the IRS Web site--has generally been considered immune to viruses. But a new virus carried by programs embedded in PDF files raises concerns that the format itself could become susceptible.

FBI ordered to reveal high-tech spy trick

In a case privacy advocates say smacks of Big Brother, U.S. District Judge Nicholas Politan ruled that the government must reveal the details of the computer monitoring system it used to gather evidence against Nicodemo Scarfo Jr., who is charged with running illegal gambling and loan-sharking operations for the Gambino crime family.

Wireless security is even flakier than we thought

Wireless security vulnerabilities have been widely publicised before but the difference with this flaw is that it might be far easier to exploit. EE Times reports that a passive ciphertext attack, based on the theoretical groundwork laid by the researchers, would allow someone with a wireless LAN connection to retrieve a security key in less than 15 minutes.

Intel aims to make AMD eat dust

Anand Chandrasekher, vice president of Intel's Architecture Group, says Intel will soon have a 500MHz advantage on AMD and the edge will keep growing.

A growing buzz over copyright protection

For several weeks, news that record companies have quietly been selling copy-protected compact discs in stores has been filtering around the Net. Although nobody has yet produced a verified copy of a CD loaded with this technology, developed by copy-protection giant Macrovision, it has produced a wave of "sightings" that have swept even to places as prominent as Amazon.com's consumer reviews.

AI Can't Yet Follow Movie Script

If you're looking for David, Steven Spielberg's loving robotic child who wants to become a real boy, or even Lt. Commander Data, this week's international conference on artificial intelligence in Seattle is the wrong place to look. Bob Bishop, president of SGI (formerly Silicon Graphics), predicted that in the 21st century we will move from artificial intelligence to artificial consciousness and even artificial emotions -- but in that he was in a definite minority.

Adobe E-Book Hacker Released

A federal magistrate judge ordered that the Russian programmer - whose arrest last month on copyright infringement charges sparked worldwide protests - be freed Monday on $50,000 bail. After a 30-minute bail hearing, U.S. Magistrate Judge Edward A. Infante released Sklyarov but said he must remain in Northern California under the supervision of a local friend, Sergei Osoakine.

The announcement will be made at a cloning conference held by the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, Panos Zavos told CNN Monday. New disc - is it the end of the music CD?

InterTrust Technologies, a maker of digital rights management software, said Monday it has partnered with start-up DataPlay to provide secure digital media in a move to thwart music piracy by replacing the compact disc. Santa Clara, Calif.-based InterTrust said it will place DRM formats on DataPlay-enabled devices, including blank and prerecorded discs. Such DataPlay discs can hold 11 hours of compressed music, or seven to 10 albums.

The Net's Peter Pan

Once, a Tampa man’s Peter Pan predilection would have been a peculiarity only to neighbors and co-workers. But the Web has made him something of an international celebrity. Hey Napsterites, we know this guy already!!!

US man to amputate legs online

A Mississippi man is to amputate his legs using a home-made guillotine and broadcast the whole grisly operation live online. Although many regard his actions as extreme, he said his do-it-yourself amputation is partly a protest at being denied the operation because it was deemed non-essential. And without the funds to pay for the operation privately, Morgan believes he has no other choice

Quote from New Disk article:

Oseth said the benefit the discs have over CDs is that not only do they prevent piracy, but the discs also have prerecordable and writeable features. Music fans, for instance, will be able to purchase an album and record their voices as they sing along with songs on the same discs. In addition, he said, the portability of the discs will enable people to jog with them, compared with CDs that are not as mobile.

Thats funny. Like I'd want to record my voice over my favorite music.

Whats wrong with that picture. You won't be able copy the music but you can record your voice along with the music. What will they think of next?

Good news articles today, TG

Yeah... sounds like yet another industrial pipedream to me. Looking at the protests that MacroVision's new CD copyright system has caused - even when no MacroVision-protected CDs have yet been identified - trying to get the consumers to accept something even more restrictive looks like a stillborn idea.

Cool

Thanks for the news TankGirl!

I must admit, I'm debating whether or not to read the one about the man to amputate his own legs online. That may be best left unread.

edit: well, I read it, and I can say I'm sure as HELL not gonna be watching it!

Thanks for the thanks, Dawn!

The do-it-yourself amputation stuff sounds pretty sick to me too... but don't miss the Peter Pan article though...

You better do something different, like call in sick; otherwise you might not get paid for your vacation.

Hmmm.... you have hardly began your vacation... and only five mamby bumpers? You call that motivation? Looks more like withdrawal symptoms of a workaholic to me...

But let's here the opinions from other members too - should we allow WT back to his shop? Or should he use his extra energy for having fun and chasing after girls instead?

re: amputation.

there is a group of people in the world who have healthy limbs and still want them removed. they are agitated that doctors with rare exception have not (so far) obliged them so a few have taken the plunge anyway. they congregate - where else - on the web. there's been a few reports including this one in the atlantic monthly several issues ago.

this guy seems very different. his "operation" will allow him to motivate for the first time in 15 years.

then there's those folks who drill holes in thier heads...

lets out the gas?
