Lucy Kaplansky: Land of the Living. As seen live on The Early Show this morning before the memorial service on CBS. (I didn't see it, too early for me.)

Big Laugh ny

I missed sinatra up top so maybe I missed this somewhere too: U2 - New York
You can't miss the NY in the lyrics of that song

plus PJ Harvey - "This Mess We're In" and "You Said Something"
well the whole album Stories from the city, stories from the sea was written in NY, if I'm not mistaken.

okay i'm from the opposite side of the earth

found that from woody guthrie - i really like that "Dust Bowl" songs
Quote:
When Woody Guthrie was singing hillbilly songs on a little Los Angeles radio station in the late 1930s, he used to mail out a small mimeographed songbook to listeners who wanted the words to his songs, On the bottom of one page appeared the following:
"This song is Copyrighted in U.S., under Seal of Copyright # 154085, for a period of 28 years, and anybody caught singin it without our permission, will be mighty good friends of ourn, cause we don't give a dern. Publish it. Write it. Sing it. Swing to it. Yodel it. We wrote it, that's all we wanted to do."
btw.

This land is your land, this land is my land
From the redwood forest to the New York island.
From the snow-capped mountains to the Gulf Stream waters
This land is made for you and me.

Flaco's mention of Pedro Navaja reminded me:

Ruben Blades - Hazme la maleta

Quote:
Refrain:
hazme la maleta mama, yo me voy en Nueva York
yo me regreso a mi tierra que [?????] mejor
Pack my suitacse, mum, I'm going to New York
I'm going back home coz [????] better

The Irish Rover
Traditional
On the fourth of July eighteen hundred and six
We set sail from the sweet cove of Cork
We were sailing away with a cargo of bricks
For the grand city hall in New York
'Twas a wonderful craft, she was rigged fore-and-aft
And oh, how the wild winds drove her.
She'd got several blasts, she'd twenty-seven masts
And we called her the Irish Rover.

We had one million bales of the best Sligo rags
We had two million barrels of stones
We had three million sides of old blind horses hides,
We had four million barrels of bones.
We had five million hogs, we had six million dogs,
Seven million barrels of porter.
We had eight million bails of old nanny goats' tails,
In the hold of the Irish Rover.

There was awl Mickey Coote who played hard on his flute
When the ladies lined up for his set
He was tootin' with skill for each sparkling quadrille
Though the dancers were fluther'd and bet
With his sparse witty talk he was cock of the walk
As he rolled the dames under and over
They all knew at a glance when he took up his stance
And he sailed in the Irish Rover

There was Barney McGee from the banks of the Lee,
There was Hogan from County Tyrone
There was Jimmy McGurk who was scarred stiff of work
And a man from Westmeath called Malone [i]
There was Slugger O'Toole who was drunk as a rule
And fighting Bill Tracey from Dover
And your man Mick McCann from the banks of the Bann
Was the skipper of the Irish Rover

We had sailed seven years when the measles broke out
And the ship lost it's way in a fog.
And that whale of the crew was reduced down to two,
Just meself and the captain's old dog.
Then the ship struck a rock, oh Lord what a shock
The bulkhead was turned right over
Turned nine times around, and the poor dog was drowned
I'm the last of the Irish Rover

I’ve been a little down because today my doctor diagnosed me with John Travolta Syndrome. It’s a condition where your face or head grows laterally, getting wider year by year. It’s not so much of a problem and it’s nothing to be ashamed of, it’s just a condition. In fact mine is good because it means my brain is getting bigger too. But not that Travolta guy, his head is mostly fat. The doctors said I am much smarter than John Travolta and I believe them.

What The? Demented New York Athletes Staggering...

An Englishman in New York
(Creme/Godley)
Demented New York athletes staggering round the block
Deforned Chicanos pour in, Chicago's rolling stock
Digital bathrooms drilling for furs
Surgical stockings marked his and hers
Guggenheim attitudes back to back
With Jewish Baroque

No way street
No way street
Happy to see you, have a nice day!

Defecting Russian dancers dance into Hockney prints
Exclusive to Bloomingdales, gift-wrapped in red
From the land of blue rinse
They boggle at menus in Olde English verse
"Ode to burger" by Keats at his worst
The hissing of omelettes the breaking of legs
Don't shoot till you see the whites of their eggs
The pink fillet mignon looks black on the negs

Strange apparatus
You've never seen
Strange apparatus, even stranger theme
Street alligators
Big Anglophile
Will navigate us through a change of style

I came, I saw, what manner of beast is this
New York, you talk a little bit left of centre
A scream, a shout
New York is throwing its weight about
Walk tall, walk straight, spit the world right in the eye
The stranger the wood the straighter the arrow
Dismembered hopeful My-Lai veterans queuing for sleaze
"Sorry no dogs, no fags, no shriners, and no amputees"
Sexual athlete applies for audition
Willing to make it in any position
Just one of the extras with blood on their faces
In snow-white and the seven basket cases
I'm happy and dopey and dirty in places
No way street
No way street
Lock up your daughters, Avon crawling!

Devoted collectors of paraphernalia out walking the rock
Battle and bitch for the ultimate kitch
of a crucifix clock
Two miniature romans, running on rails
Appear every hour and bang in the nails
I've got to have it, Christ, I gotta be the first
on our block

Disturbing facts about Nazi splinter groups seen on the news
They're picketing synagogues and claiming that
Hitler was King of the Jews
Caught in the tunnel an ambulance howls
A men's room attendant is flapping his jowls
Ssshh, Howard Johnson is moving his bowels

Strange apparatus
You've never seen
Strange apparatus, even stranger theme
Street alligators
Big Anglophile
Will navigate us through a change of style
Strange apparatus
You've never seen
Strange apparatus, even stranger theme
Walk straight, walk tall, spit the world right in the eye
The stranger the wood, the straighter the arrow

Pet Shop Boys
"New York City Boy"

New York City boy
You’ll never have a bored day
'Cause you're a New York City boy
Where Seventh Avenue meets Broadway
When you're a boy, some days are tough
Lying on your bed playing punk rock and stuff
Home is a boot camp you gotta escape
Wanna go and wander in the ticker tape

You feel, the deal, is real
You're a New York City boy
So young, so run
Into New York City

New York City boy
You’ll never have a bored day
'Cause you're a New York City boy
Where Seventh Avenue meets Broadway

The street is amazing
The hoochies unreal
Check out all the hardware at the latest deal
Hear a song, that’s the bomb
If you don’t get that mix it’s got 86'd

You feel, the deal, is real
you're in New York City

New York City boy
You’ll never have a bored day
'Cause you're a New York City boy
Where Seventh Avenue meets Broadway

New York City boy
