The greatest guitarists of all time
Another top 100 list is out and Jimi Hendrix is listed at #1. It's a little tough for me to judge but I'd like to hear your favourites and why.

Beyond his defiant deconstruction of pop music and blues, beyond the grace that channeled through him from some other world, his working knowledge of 57 varieties of various popular music -- from big band to deep soul and gospel -- gave him a brave new world from which to draw. Many of his explosive performances had one foot in the relevant worlds of the Beatles, the Stones, and other popular musics, while the other searched and found firm terrain in 20th century black music. Robert Fripp prolly, although I like lots, and respect many, Fripp is the innovative one, the original one, the much copyed and followed one.

 FRIPP No question. No competition. Not even a close contender for second place. Some more suggested Fripp downloads to supplement Greedy's: Any King Crimson. The League of Gentlemen: Inductive Resonance, Heptaparaparshinokh, Dislocated, Cognitive Dissonance David Sylvian and Robert Fripp: anything from The First Day or Damage Andy Summers and Robert Fripp: anything from I Advance Masked or Bewitched Peter Gabriel II: Exposure, Here Comes the Flood David Bowie: the albums Heroes and Scary Monsters, especially the song Scary Monsters, which to my mind is still one of the most hysterical guitar solos to date. ..and a few assorted others. |

Stevie Ray Vaughan - (Eric Clapton about SRV)
"I don't think anyone has commanded my respect more, to this day. The first time I heard Stevie Ray, I thought, "Whoever this is, he is going to shake the world". I was in my car and I remember thinking, I have to find out, before the day is over, who that guitar player is. That doesn't happen to me very often, that I get that way about listening to music. I mean, about three or four times in my life I've felt that way, in a car, listening to the radio, where I've stopped the car, pulled over, listened, and thought, I've got to find out before the end of the day, not, you know, sooner or later, but I have to know NOW who that is. Eric Clapton "My guitar is still my voice. When I hear a piece of music in my head, I don't hear a song, I hear the guitar part. So I write words to that and sing it. The guitar is first and foremost in my head... I'll always try to play with the most amount of soul through the guitar." (Eric Clapton) and a newcomer Jonny Lang B.B. King was impressed enough to invite Lang on stage to trade a few choruses. Lang, who shares King’s technique of answering his own vocals with short bursts of guitar fills, learned something just from standing on the same stage with the master. "He’s such a great influence," said Lang. "We toured together for a month and he invited me up on stage to jam. We had a blast. I’d look over at him and realize that I was sitting next to a legend." B.B. returned the compliment in the Los Angeles Times. "Jonny Lang’s 16, so he’s got youth and talent with it. When I was young, I didn’t play like I do today. So these kids are starting at the height that I’ve reached. Think what they might do over time."

Well, ok, if there had to be a contender, a couple come to mind...
Adrian Belew: Though I'm not a big fan of his solo work he's absolutely one of the most inovative stylists on the planet. Check out his work with Crimson, Talking Heads, Bowie, Laurie anderson and others... Trey Gunn and Tony Levin: Both of whom are really the premier Chapman Stick players, which I would consider guitar, although Levin is better known for his straight bass work. Phil Manzanera: Look for the album Primitive Guitars and other solo work, as well as his work with Roxy Music. Daniel Lanois, Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins), Michael Hedges, Bill Nelson... and of course the geriatric crowd, Steve Howe, David Gilmour, Mark Knopfler, Jeff Beck, Mike Oldfield... and let's not forget SNAKEFINGER  ...Did I mention Robert Fripp? (and no, I'm not being any more genre specific than only mentioning guitar players whose music I like, and whom I consider inovative in what is a very very tired genre in itself: guitar music) |

I’ve been a little down because today my doctor diagnosed me with John Travolta Syndrome. It’s a condition where your face or head grows laterally, getting wider year by year. It’s not so much of a problem and it’s nothing to be ashamed of, it’s just a condition. In fact mine is good because it means my brain is getting bigger too. But not that Travolta guy, his head is mostly fat. The doctors said I am much smarter than John Travolta and I believe them. |
