Default changing file types

i made a booboo.
i was in winmx this morning and went to rename a file and somehow, mistakingly, changed the file type.
it is now listed as a "mpe".
and will not refresh in my "shared files".
yep.............i'm a dork.

so now it won't list in my "shared files" either.

so how do i change this????

it's not a big-biggie, but it would be nice to know.

thanks

Hi nanook!

Just find the file with Windows Explorer, then right click -> Rename it (F2 is also a handy shortcut to rename a selected file). When you have renamed the file correctly as a mp3 refresh your lib in WinMX and the missing file will show again.

Double-click the icon on My Computer.
Open the View menu.
Click Options.
Click the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide MS-DOS file extensions for file types that are registered" checkbox" checkbox.
Click OK to save your settings.

Then when you view files in explorer, you should see the file extensions at the end of each file.

i did that tg, but in the properties, it is still listed as an Mpe. and won't refresh in "shared files".

all my mp3's are in winamp, but this particular one will not list there, but will play there.

so i went to explore My Music.

the name is Mp3, but the actual file is mpe.

how can i change the properties?maybe.

i've tried about everything.

i'm trying to understand what Oscar explained..........sounds like he wants me to just make the extension visible.............???

i need to change it.

am i making this more difficult than it actually is????

Hmmm... make sure you have the file extensions visible in your Windows Explorer (Options|View|Hide MS-DOS file extensions... unchecked, like Oscar adviced). Then find the problematic file and verify once more that it really has .mp3 extension. If this is the case, it should start playing with your default player (WinAmp?) with double-clicking it. Ok so far?

If the file is in a shared directory and refresh does not bring it visible on WinMX, unshare that directory and share it again.

If this does not help either go back to Windows Explorer and make a copy of the original file (select it and then copy/paste) and rename the copy a little differently from the original (of course see that it still has the .mp3 extension). Then go back to WinMX and try refreshing. Does the copy show ok in the library?

What Oscar said was slightly off topic. Tg was correct and it should have worked. Maybe the file was in use when you tried to rename or maybe you didn't hit enter or maybe you didn't put the . before Mp3 or maybe I don't know.

You're welcome nanook. Remember that P2P is a strictly topical forum, no mamby stuff here!

I didn't think my post was off topic at all. The reason for making the file extension visible was to see if extension itself got changed or was incorrect. If it did, then you see it and would be able to make the change to the file extension. How the filename got changed, I wouldn't know exactly why. Some apps, when you d/l an mp3, it will d/l as a different file extension, but when it completes, it will change to mp3 and can be played. Apparently, there was a problem with the file extension here..Well anyway, at least you got it working.
