Last Days At Xolox
the fast growing gnutella based p2p program Xolox has decided to close their doors rather than (apparently) risk a lawsuit by the riaa, music publishers/dog walkers of america and the grand order of ancient hibernians.
xolox stood out from the p2p crowd by being the smallest and easiest to use file sharing application available and one which finally brought multi-source downloading to the gnutella familly, greatly freeing it's notoriously clogged arteries. shuttdown occurs dec. 1st. xolox will be missed. - js. I wonder what has really been going on behind the scenes. I found no information about their closing at their website - on discussion forums it is taken as a fact though. The team of three young guys might be an easy target for the RIAA to bully so maybe that is what happened - but I would like to hear it from themselves. If they do close, I hope they will release the source code for the program anyway (accidentally of course so that the RIAA doesn't sue them for that )...

Thanks for the screenshot, napho!
That 'taking into account' leaves me wondering even more. These guys were not working with FastTrack technology and for a group that has obviously put a great effort into their client development they seem to be leaving way too nicely and easily. I can't help getting an impression that a couple of friendly RIAA legal guns have assisted them in that 'taking into account' part... - tg ps. and thanks to you Jack as well! |

well, when you figure the guys at xolox aren't making a dime and the riaa will spend several million $$ bringing suit, a way can be found that benefits both parties...the people being the exception of course.
hey wait a minute, maybe i could launch a p2p and then get "per$uaded" to close it down. yeah. that's the ticket & power to the people! merry christmas everybody! - js. |

Looks like another scared rabbit bites the dust...Too bad, I liked the XoloX app.
At least 'the donkey' is still running strong for now. Last edited by zombywoof : 30-11-01 at 02:42 PM. |

while the client page expired keeping it from commencing downloads there are a couple of work arounds, by far the easiest being just disconnect from the net, open xolox and reconnect, or open xolox before you log on. works fine either way.
