winmx and many p2ps were shuttered by their owners in response to civil take-down notices received late last summer, the end result of a protracted legal battle decided last june in the riaa's favor by the us supreme court. the original wpnp connection servers are no longer in operation. there are some work-arounds using independent peer-client/servers that allow connections to a smaller community, and if you do a little searching here at this forum and elsewhere you'll find more information, but unfortunately the grand centralized network that moved petabytes of content and was known by many affectionate fans as winny has followed the original napster into history.
with the coming of newer file-sharing protocols and particularly with frontcodes' refusal to update the client and address the exasperatingly long queues, it's fair to say most members had long since moved elsewhere. still, the application remains a favorite among certain users and i expect a winmx-based network will continue in a much reduced form for as long as there's a dedicated fan base willing to do the work needed to keep it going. - js. |

I just noticed some bizarre search results on WinMX. No wonder the message at the top was that they were protecting the network from flooding.

So what's not working? Are you connected to the wpn? Queueing and searching working? Shared files showing?

Oh, so you've been away and missed the shutdown and patch here:
http://www.p2p-zone.com/underground/...ad.php?t=21985 wpn is the winmx peer network you usually use to connect. |

Business/Legal reasons. Other people have setup their own host cache servers so it still works pretty good when you install the patch.
http://www.slyck.com/winmx.php Ah, here's the old story: http://www.slyck.com/news.php?story=921 |

can you use another p2p application - or is there a reason you have to use winmx, like resuming partial files?

With the release of the new winmxgroup anti-smokeblower patch there has been an influx of users rejoining the network.
Smokeblower networks are the division of Macrovision that flood p2p networks with thousands of fake results to waste any users time and drive them off the network, as well as this being an excellent distributed denial of service attack method due to the sheer number of fake results. With recent breakthroughs in cracking the winmx proprietory protocol its now possible to filter their efforts completely, restoring the balance in favour of those who wish to share files. Whilst I do not encourage folks to share copyrighted material I also stand against illegal attacks on users who may happen to type in a single word to be attacked in this way. |

hi quartz! welcome to the forums. i'm not as set in my ways when it comes to dissuading folks of sharing copyrighted materials, mainly because copyrights now last so long they steal culture from future users, or at least lock it up indefinitely. disney preventing a grieving parent from using the 87 year old winnie the pooh in a memorial to a passed child is only the most recent unfortunate example. winnie was in fact a very real bear. he literally started his public life in the public domain as a gift to the london zoo, but the public use of his identity has since been stolen by disney. how's that for bold-faced hypocrisy? we're in complete agreement on network independence i'm happy to say, and should never stand for interference. thanks for posting.

Anyone wanting to fix the WinMX peer network connection problem can go to http://www.mxpie.com/ where a patch can be found as well as instructions for how to install it, where to get WinMX now and other information and advice.
