Digital fingerprints in themselves are handy tools and might have many excellent p2p uses. For example, if p2p programs included song fingerprints into their searchable metadata, we could do searches with partial fingerprints extracted from brief recorded samples. You could grab a music sample from a TV ad and use it to run a search for all available rips (with matching fingerprints) from your favorite p2p network. In the best case you could be downloading the promoted album within minutes...
