Rip Off Britain (even more)
Yes, I've been posting on that OTHER board, traitor, Ok I Know, nevertheless some of you MAY NOT have caught this little snippett from Hong Kong..
Quote /on I've been reading up all I can find in your e'zine about UK ADSL co$t$ and speed specifications being offered to subscribers - and it appears to me that they are being right royally screwed - not only on pricings but on the paltry speeds being offered. Nobody even offers 512K or even 600K/sec connections here in Hong Kong, the MINIMUM is 1.5Mbits/sec, and there's 3Mb; 6Mb & 10Mbit/sec available as well as cable connections at variable speeds depending on network loadings. For myself, with an ADSL connection of 1.5Mbit/sec for downloading, I can often find that "DUMETER" shows speeds well in excess of 1.9Mbit/sec. and I have been able to download 2 MP3 files from Sacramento California with each file showing 60K+ and that still was using only 66% of my bandwidth. As for uploads away from me - I often see 70K/sec with multiple comedy files flying around the world, I'm sure that if the demand was greater, I'd see even faster upload speeds. What do I pay ???? Well, in HK Dollars it is $168 = GPB13.88 & for that I get full, uninterupted 24/7/365 with an 8MB e'mail box There are many other ISPs which offer similar or even cheaper fees - such as icare.com with the first 3 months charged at $98 = GBP 8.09 & then $158 = GBP 13.05 per month for 1.5Mbit ADSL - or $10 more for a 3Mbit/sec connection, and a HK$60 increase on the basic 1.5Mbit/sec service will get you 6Mbit/sec, and they all provide a 100MB e'mail box. And - I might as well drive home - there's NO installation/connection charges and the ADSL modem is loaned (for free) during the time the user subscribes. It seems to me that : 1) There's an awful lot of "Let's rip off ADSL customers" thoughts by the UK service providers. 2) These same "Service Providers" only provide a "service" speed of one third of what the civilised world outside of UK/Europe knows as ADSL !! I rejoice in having the foresight to quit grotty, gone to the dogs, Britain almost half a long life-time ago. I may have to fight off the Commie Running Dogs - but at least *I* live in a technologically advanced area of the world. Quote /off Just so you know... I'm travelling again, only posting when I can.. I can relate. My cable company just cut it's speed in half without telling anyone. Needless to say the price wasn't reduced accordingly.
