This is the Coding Technologies mp3PRO Zone Home page where you can download either an mp3PRO Player/Encoder or WinAmp Plugin. Quote:

You can actually play mp3pro files in regular winamp, though I don't know if the quality suffers.
There is a specific plugin you can use, there's one on http://www.mp3pro.com/ But it seems winamp Input filters can only distinguish based on file extension, so the plugin has to take over playing of all .mp3s. This is bad, because it has some issues, and isn't exactly rock solid (I've had it crash twice in 5 minutes while playing a streamed mp3). The default mp3 filter has many more options and seens to work better overall. |

I was trying to find out for certain what those mp3PRO files played like without the Plugin. I figured that since I had WinMX going already I could just look at my shares and open the files by right-clicking and selecting play. I saw that I had an enqueue option so selected some files (apparently 12) and chose "enqueue in WinAmp" At this point WinMX freezes and I notice in the Task Bar that WinAmp was trying to open. WinXP has the feature that groups like items on the Task Bar and I saw the number kept increasing for WinAmp. In another thread I mentioned a 90min Eagles mp3 I have, well even though it wasn't one of the files I selected it was what all 12 copies of WinAmp were trying to play! The computer would not respond to anything I was doing so I ended up hitting the Reset Button to stop it. Anyway the point I am trying to make is that through all of this not only did WinAmp not crash, I couldn't even stop it. |

Playing MP3Pro
Thanks to TF I downloaded his reccommended selection (Deep dish) and expected to have to apply all sorts of new codecs to play it.
Strangely this was not the case, accidently I clicked on the file as it was stored in my download folder, and my trusty (1997) copy of WinPlay3 (FhG institute) played it fine, showing the correct bitrate (96k) and the encoding frequency (22kHz) . Ok It's not my type of music, (machine techno) and to my ageing ears, though it sounded musical with no obvious distortion, it did lack the brightness of some of my 256k and VBR encoded material, but no doubt due to its small size will do a good job on a small memory MP3 player [walkman] where top quality is not to be expected. I need to do more research on the file, like spectral analysis , and harmonic content measurment to get a comparison wih the best VBR [Lame] encode at a similar bitrate. More later, no doubt? Snark.. http://www.iis.fhg.de/audio for information on Winplay3 etc [may no longer be currently available, but is on the net elsewhere] |

OK, let me get this whole mess straightened out... we have 3 servers:
pommie.dns2go.com ranger121.dns2go.com napsterites.dyndns.net Are they all linked? I can never connect to napsterites, ranger121 is down more than it is up, pommie always works for me. If they're all linked, then it doesn't matter where I connect to, so I just want to know what the set up is. |

I have been having problems with something that is causing my comp to crash recently. Its either a memory module or motherboard or possibly even an overheating cpu problem: I am as we post eliminating the possibilities in order to cure the problem and eliminate downtime. When it's cured, you'll know, because I'll have the server up 24/7. |

you can remove all text in a previous message and replace it with a ".", leaving in essence a ghost post. but for reasons stated above (and others), you can't remove the box it came in w/out permission.
