'practically unlimited search results'?
Sounds to me like they used the normal reghack to increase search results to 999 or similar. The other 'cool features' can probably be done easily with ResHacker. It's not worth any money. |

I did some fiddling with the MaxSearchResults reghack, and it seems that Kazaa will never return over about 250 results, no matter how general your search is. This might be capped in some way because I still use Kazaa 1.4 (*cough* http://www.geocities.com/cleankazaa/ ) and v171 might not have this cap, but I'm strongly suspecting the screenshot of 5582 search results is fake.
Anyone with v171 care to try this reghack and find the maximum? I used 'dave' as a search term, just like the screenshot. |

Certainly there's some kind of results limit hard coded into the program. I max out at about 285 then with the search more feature it doubles.

This bugger works. You can change the start page and it searches nodes constantly for lots of results though it takes a while.

A thread at UTC has some more technical info. The Diet Kaza app makes Kazaa keep doing 'Search More' searches in other supernodes. The author is pretty smart about this, and will also give you the registered Diet Kaza version for free if you email him (!). It seems to redirect the Kazaa homepage by running a local webserver and routing desktop.kazaa.com back to 127.0.0.1. Very clever.
The author ('chip') also states a few times that his Diet Kazaa is legal because it doesn't alter Kazaa in any way, just uses smart tricks to accomplish its goals. KazaaLite is illegal because it's a modified package (just like mine). KLite also asked to partner with him, but he refused because of this. Also, DietKaza is older than KLite, but used to be called KazaaTap (read the thread for info on why it was renamed). |

The quick serch doesn't work with the latest version of Kazaa. And search more automatically isn't working for 1.7.1 anymore.

Yes. It just keeps searching nodes 'til it comes up with thousands of results. |

I've been fiddling about a bit with Visual Basic (blegh, I really need to learn C++) and Kazaa, and most of the things DietKaza accomplishes are fairly easy to duplicate - I know I can do most of the stuff DietKaza can do myself (some in theory, some I already did).
Anyone else into programming and tweaking Kazaa programmatically? |

It seems to work best when you run a search under All instead of changing it to Title or Artist. It searches for about 30 seconds for something popular like Britney Spears, gets about 1700 results; then you get the disconnected box. After a couple of clicks on OK it reconnects and gets up to 3000 results. This is repeated until the results reach around 8000. It takes about 5 minutes or so. Of course you don't need 8000 results for a popular artist but it's good to be able to search about 30 nodes to find something rare. This program is a little buggy but it does things that the other proggies don't. |

Diet Kaza Author
Greetings,
This is Chip, from dietk.com. I've registered on this board, in case there is any questions I can answer regarding my program, and to hopefully make some more friends. I realize I may, or may not be welcome here, depending on some of the opinions I've read. Anyways, I welcome anyone who would like to receive the deluxe edition free to give it a test drive, please email me: chip@dietk.com The guys at UTC have been very cool regarding DietK, and you can chat with any of us at irc.p2pchat.org #unitethecows.com I have also posted a tutorial for the homies who would like to try making their 'own' KaZaA Lite, changing the splash screen, etc. Many people dont know how to do this, but if you would like to read about it, hit up the dietk.com forums, main chat, tutorial #1. Thanks, chip@dietk.com |
