Items 1, 2, and 3 are doable, and I have no doubt a Democrat controlled congress would persue them (not that it would accomplish anything, it's all politics after all). But it's item number 4 that I don't see happening. If you agree that we've stirred up a hornets' nest in the middle east, then what makes you think the hornets will stop attacking us after we retreat? They'll be looking for a fight. The truth is that leaving Iraq will not save money and it will not save lives. If we don't bring the fight to them, they'll bring it to us. Civilians will continue to die, but they'll be American civilians. The security measures used by soldiers in Iraq to root out insurgents will have to be used here, and we'll loose our domestic freedoms bit by bit, perhaps permanently.

The only way the majority of us will be able to move on with our lives is for us to send a few volunteers to die in foreign lands, and that's the harsh reality of this new century. Being the wealthiest and third largest nation in the world, we can certainly afford to fight a prolonged war overseas. If that's what it takes to distract our enemies from attacking our homeland, then perhaps it's worth the sacrifice.
