blondie was close but a bit late to the party in '80. rap had been around for a while before that and even charted. the sugarhill gang scored a top 40 hit in '79 with "rappers' delight", cut to to the bass of chic's "good times" and aerosmith had "walk this way" in '75, but blondie went all the way to #1 - with original music no less. back then the stuff was fun. sugarhill exploded in '82 with "the message," and by then rap was on it's way to the mainstream. so much so even chevy chase did a parody on his eponymous '83 lp, of which only 5000 copies were pressed (i have one). but what started out as light soon got very heavy. after the message rap started its major turn into darkness and anger.
