Turns out they were both wrong. It took the unifying force of a common enemy in Germany and Japan to bring the States out of the depression. We defeated socialism and fascism overseas, not surprisingly those same elements died out here as well. Love it or hate it, the military-industrial complex carried us out of the depression and through the world war and the cold war after that.
