U.S. Warns of Attacks on Indonesian Nightspots
JAKARTA (Reuters) -
Americans in Indonesia should take precautions against possible attacks on nightspots during the holy month of Ramadan, the U.S. embassy said in a statement.
Mobs have attacked numerous restaurants and cafes across the capital Jakarta in the past week. Late on Friday, protesters attacked one Jakarta nightspot frequented by foreigners, breaking down its doors and smashing its windows, said the Jakarta Post.
The protesters have demanded that bars and restaurants stop serving alcohol during Ramadan, which began last week and lasts until mid-November. "The U.S. embassy cautions American citizens to avoid standalone bars, clubs or nightclubs where similar acts of violence may be repeated," said the statement, issued late on Saturday.
