Slap should be just part of what a good bass player can do well. The bass players who impress me the most are Less Claypool followed by Geddy Lee. Flea is great - but not the best. Jack Bruce was a true pioneer, but like many artists of his day, he was following in the footsteps of better blues and jazz musicians from a prior era.
There are so many bass players worthy of mention historically, it's not even funny.
