that would be a major wet blanket for sure except for the supreme court. in the betamax case they said copying for personal use is legal. i'm not sure the riaa wants to revisit this at the moment, not with a potential loss staring them in the face. regardless of the wording in the dmca, many insist (incl. me) it's unconstitutional.
we've been file sharing like mad for what, 2 years now? the riaa estimates it's lost 2 billion clams. i may be wrong, but i'm certain if they thought they could win even one little case they would've sued the sh*t out of johnnys' mom & dad by now but just think what it would mean if the riaa lost. another napster would light back up the next day and there'd be no looking back, and no future for the labels.
