the public experimental nets are retired, in operation now are strictly by invitation "micronets", started by close pals. some have just 4 or 5 friends. and they all started the same way – one user at a time. don’t wait around for your phone to ring, jump in and make one yourself! :ND:

you can do it– and so can anyone reading this thread - half the fun is starting up your own group. you’ll all get there – you just need one host! :tu:

a bit of waste info in this forum..

wasted.....?
anyone game?

nice link multi. it's exciting to see entire boards devoted to waste. it's kind of amazing actually for me. i shouldn't be too surprised after seeing the activity on this thread (it’s already the 9th biggest in nu history). there is obviously a lot of interest but it's still kind of startling since i keep thinking of waste in smaller, more personal terms, even though i know that in the aggregate it's going to be huge. i mean a few weeks ago nobody had this thing. i had to email copies to people and explain what it was. now there're whole boards exploring in fine detail minor nuances of it's operating platform. it happened so fast!

maybe we can change that adage from “if you build it they will come” to “if you build it they will come really fast!” napster already proved that and winmx and fasttrack and bt, but every time i think interest in p2ps couldn't get stronger, a new one comes along that changes the rules and everybody has to have it all over again.

can’t wait to see what’s coming next. :BB:

I'v been active over there.
Lots of links on in the resources thread.

>90 + GB of stuff for the napsterites!!!!
I started a mesh without a network id, within
a couple of days it amalgamated with half a
dozen others.
The public mesh peaked at 150 simultaneous users and 3.8TB.

Multi, any objection to me distributing your waste installation
guide?

>Who's IP begins with a 172?
Usually people with a 172.16-32.*.* LAN-only ip that
is not reachable across the internet.

NAT support in waste is poor at the moment, it seems
that the force-ip option has to be used to broadcast the
correct internet ip as well as configuring port forwarding.
Waste would work significantly better if it did edonkey style
internet ip detection.

Since it bears repeating;
>With someone's public key, you could decode the
>traffic encrypted using that person's key.
Nope, you need the corresponding private key to
decode traffic.

>in other words, someone could theoretically monitor
>you as an individual, from info gleaned from your>posted public key,
No.

>does anyone know if there is going to be an
>pdate or any kind of upgrade in the near future??
There is a new version called wasted with some minor fix's.

>I already heard rumors of a Linux port being available.
Server only at the moment, no front end for chat/browsing.
>this doesn't do multisource downloading yet, right?
correct.
Bug reports and feature requests are being collected
at http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/waste/
I encourage people on private networks to post a summary
of their waste experiance

>Network chatter is also fairly low
for firewalled people possibly, for open routing nodes
it is large, with files being relayed between
firewalled users the traffic will fill a T1 on a large mesh.

I remember the first public tests of bittorrent some time ago.
I suspect waste activity is going to go quiet for a while, the
early adopters who try out anything new have had a go and
the major work that the waste protocol requires will take time.
My guess it that an improved waste will be massive in a year
or two.

hello and welome to NU

from info here.. just give the forum here a mention because everyone was contributing..
the info on the waste networks i got from
http://www.dhorrocks2003.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/
wich i think were salvaged from nullsoft originaly...
i think its early days for waste..
and definatly early days for this type of p2p networking...
seems a few improved clients around already..

multi 18-06-03 12:04 AM

those look like the nightly releases...

i think its just a matter of replacing the waste .exe with this one...

i just tried..
WASTE-wasted-0.12b.exe 09-Jun-2003 04:46 298K
renamed it to WASTE.exe and replaced the original one in the waste folder..
back on the network now, running like nothing had happened..
looking for improvements now..

Well I'd call it the Roldengod network, I mean if Gr can set it up with NO documentation, then I just gotta be summat good...

I'm game, got it loaded, got fixed IP, and a re-direct address, just need the right name, and we are there...

Greets all JS, GR , Knife, Multi, Napho (your link is dead Napho?)

etc etc...

multi 18-06-03 04:17 PM

hi snark!

it seems from what i am reading it seems to get a bit chaotic over a certain amount of users..
it maybe 50...but from what i can tell 25-30 would be the best bet...over that sounds like it gets a little congested with network traffic..

relic 18-06-03 05:11 PM

i'd be interested in the goodies. if someone with the program could pm me, i can give them details on how to get me the file.

edit:

yes google is my friend and i found a copy.

Dawn & Relic: if you drop into the chat I'll get VNC running and set up your waste for you..it's an option like..

Đ :S:

p.s. watch where you get your waste! The program and the source were both released and some people may alter the code. There is at least two links to waste in this thread, one of which I personally guarantee came from a reputable source and has been edited in no way whatsoever..
