I'll bet most of you haven't heard of this
LANShare. It lets people on local area networks share files. University campuses for example.

I've heard of that. There's also a LAN edition of gnucleus. Its designed for institutions that block the gnutella network, so you set up a private LAN with gnucleus LAN.
