I remember how during the earlier Napster days many Napster users tried to help the record industry and the proverbial starving artist with their ideas and suggestions for new business models in the era of p2p. There was talk about micropayments, tipping systems etc. linked to p2p software to compensate for 'lost' sales. Well not anymore.

It has become very clear ever since that the record industry does not want to adapt. Instead, they want to stick to the status quo and keep selling overpriced CDs as long and as much as they possibly can. They have no intention of giving up their teen star business with huge promotional costs and a whopping 1 % success rate. If it was up to them p2p would have never happened. If it was up to them p2p would have died when Napster died. If it was up to them the proverbial starving artist would keep starving forever.

i remember when Pink Floyd The Wall first came out on video cassette. it had this funky large mgm? cardbord box, and cost 80 bucks. and yes, of course i bought it. funny how the prices on video cassettes came down, yet they still made bank.

as far as royalties on used cds, ummm werent royalites payed the first time the cd was purchased?

I would liken this move to surcharges on ATM's. Nobody likes to pay extra to access their own money, which is why there is a movment to outlaw surcharges. Until that happens some banks are saying that they'll refund the surcharges that other banks charge, and needless to say they're getting a lot of attention for it. I think the large used CD stores like Media Play would do well to refund the double royalties to their customers (if that ever happens).

But I think the fundamental issue is the fact that a non-governmental body is charging sales tax. That pisses me off because the record industry has only as much authority to levy taxes as the federal government gives them, which means the government isn't doing its job. The Constitution is supposed to guarantee representation with taxation, but the RIAA doesn't have any consumer representatives, elected or otherwise. And on top of that none of the revenue goes towards public works or social programs. It's too bad we can't all cry Revolution and storm Hollywood with armies of militia, we have to be civil and fight an economic war.

so basically the RIAA is saying from the food I eat to the shoes I wear I never really owned them...I am simply 'renting' the products? hmph if that is the case they (the RIAA) can collect the lunch I just ate...it just won't look the same as when I bought it :)

not pertaining to used cd's, but to a brand new one i bought.
if i can't do what i choose to, with something i just paid for, and is supposebly mine, than what the fuck!

it must be the actual plastic i own, eh?
and if i want to play frisbee with it, i will damn it!

we don't actually own mp3's either, so legally there's no difference, except one is more or less free.

If my memory serves me correctly, this "royalties on used CD's" thing has been tried before - and didn't go very far.

I guess all the legal expenses are making them fiscally grab-happy, so they are having another go at it.

Certainly gives newly enhanced meaning to that CD Player with the "special attachment" Ðiego posted a while back (in Hyperspace) :BL:.
