Non Americans playing a huge role in file sharing
 

It started out as Napster and Scour as the big two but now non Americans seem to be the major players. iMesh is Israeli, WinMX is Canadian,Gnutella has been popular in Europe and heavily developed by Germans. Blubster and Filetopia are Spanish, and many of the OpenNap servers are based in Europe and some in Japan. Many eDonkey servers appear to be European as well. Of course FastTrack is based in the Netherlands.

One great big happy filesharing family, yes? 'Tis a shame this cooperative behavior doesn't spread itself around a bit :(

The international - dare I say global - nature of the filesharing phenomenon/movement/revolution is one of its best protections against corporate powers like the RIAA and the Hollywood. National borders are almost transparent in Internet communications, and the same applies to p2p communications and development. Even strict control measures in any particular country would simply push the filesharing activity and the hottest software development elsewhere. It does not matter where on the planet a p2p program is written and compiled, it takes just minutes to spread it all over the planet and perhaps a few hours to distribute it to millions.

:tu: :AP: It is amazing indeed, and this remarkable thing has gone almost ignored by the mainstream media (not our WT though! :tu: ) Having millions of people from around the globe gathering eagerly together in the various p2p meeting places... most of them motivated to spend lots of quality time sharing and communicating with each other in a predominantly positive spirit... happily ignoring all geographic, national, religious, political, social and age borders that seem to generate constant tensions and conflicts in the real world... wow, that is a major achievement and it is by no means a thing of the past!

The barrier of entry is still not low enough but that's got more to do with internet than with P2P. Not everyone has got high(er) speed internet access, and those who do have do not necessarily P2P. P2P is still in its infancy, just like the internet, and the RIAA can whine all it wants, it all be very difficult to stop this (r)evolution.

It's a fun game to watch (and tp participate in).

An Aussie company, Sharman Networks, now owns KaZaA.
Creator Kazaa BV, previously known as FastTrack, is still Netherlands based. According to CNet, this unknown Aussie company (No ACN number. nothing??)"now carries bragging rights as the world's largest file-swapping network"

You Americans are so lucky! You’ve got fantastic things like the RIAA, MusicNet, PressPlay. Here in Europe we have to manage without those guys..

Downloading of music is legit. Drinks and drugs are easy to get. What is mess Europe is.

You should be grateful your ancestors wanted to move to the US.
