Ethnic music
 

I've never been able to get into Indian or Chinese music. :con:
Latin music has been enjoying a resurgence lately.
Israeli music is bouncy like Eastern European tunes.
Got any foreign faves?

Actually, I'd say I like "ethnic music" just as much as "homogenized non-ethnic-specific musics," if there is in fact such a thing. (somehow, I envision someone with a mullet)

As a musician I think I've been more influenced (not to mention intoxicated) by ethnic musics, even though I may not be as hip to its scope, than by all the British and American pap I usually listen to.

...to mention but a scant few--as well as a lot of "fusion" or world styles touched on by such artists as Steve Reich, Philip Glass and Jon Hassell etc and the even wilder experimental fusions by groups such as Muslim Gauze, Popul Vuh, Afro Celt Sound System, Peter Gabriel etc. Other movements I find really fascinating are 'musical archaeologists' Such As Mouth Music, Master Musicians of Jajouka (as well as Markahuasi and even groups such as the Kronos Quartet) that are researching, reviving and mutating ancient forms of music.

It's more than slightly amazing to me that we are moving into an age where music may be the sole refuge of entire cultural paradigms.

An interesting observation Ramona! :ND: Might apply in some degree to visual arts and written word too.... the key factor being the digitizing of related information and establishing a lasting presence for it in the cyberspace.

I see an important role for P2P in this process. The millions of private computers, the Internet and the entire p2p infrastructure together form a sort of holographic cultural memory where a few dedicated individuals located in different parts of the planet are enough to guarantee the salvation and 'regeneration' of any artist's work even in extreme cases like, say, the sinking of Australia.... :CG: :S:

there are different styles of israeli music, anything from rock (only in hebrew) to contemporary to mediterranean (also known as "mizrachit" <-- the bouncy stuff :D)

:beer: for both of you... I think of music as the best representation of the trend of change that takes place in thinking and writing - sometimes I think its in a more advanced state. I have one band in mind now for recommendation: Anima Sound System. They have six albums so far - I have five shared on the donkey. The first is called Anima - I am confused by categories, some of their music is deemed as dub - don't know what that means, but some songs have hungarian ethnic music elements. Later albums (while preserving that element also) move onto incorporating other ethnic elements as well, as you might guess from the titles of there albums:

Mariguana Cha Cha Cha (well, I don't know exactly which ethnic musical traits we hear here ;) )
Gipsy Sound Clash

Transglobal Underground remixed some of their songs, on their current album they have a song featuring Asian Dub Foundation. And as far as p2p goes, they have a link to AudioGalaxy on their website...

Hasidic New Wave on the Knitting Factory label is a band I sometimes perform with and on their latest CD they feature some great Senegalese drummers. They play Traditional and original Jewish melodies in a far out way, sort of 70s and 80s Miles. Check them out.

Temple of Sound & Rizwan-Muazzam Qawwali, featuring Neil Sparkes, Jah Wobble, Omar Puentes, others: People's Colony No. 1

The late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's nephews crush traditional sufi music together with layers of state-of-the-fat electronic dance textures. Fucking amazing. Try the darker tracks: Tears of Light, with an unearthly percussion arrangement, or Paradise of Nada, wherein the name Temple of Sound is definitely lived up to. The mix of acidic scratch tracks, tablas and Qawwali wailing is completely intoxicating.

Some Haitian suggestions:

Azor - strong voodoo influences, he's very big in Japan for some reason
Strings - sort of cross bteween Haitian kompa and Gypsy Kings (have to declare personal interest: family connection to group's founder)
Sweet Micky, Top Vice - 2 top kompa bands
'racine' (category as opposed to band) - Haitian voodoo music, usually just drums and voices; very powerful at night, especially when it ain't coming from your radio!:eek:
